Probably because he's not viewed as a perfect compliment and more like a slower, less physical clone.

Slower and weaker? yes. He doesnt plow through people like Mayo but he takes them down. He is incredibly smart and not only knows his position but the position of other players as well (something BB loves in players) and he is very instinctive on the field.

I wont mind a player of James calibur playing next to Mayo for the next few years. The guys is tremendously talented and will be a great pickup for some team.

I mind, at least until proven wrong, but less physical means he's less capable of taking on OL as required in NE's 3-4. I don't care if he decleats people, wrap up is good enough for me, but he's never been particularly good at taking on blocks and I don't see him as an upgrade over Bru or Guyton in that department. Mayo runs a 4.5, Laurinaitis runs 4.7, Mayo was able to use his speed to make plays even when he made mistakes, Laurinaitis is going to find it much harder to recover. There are kids projected later in the draft who offer as much and more, with less hype.
