Gilmore traded to Carolina

I mean I don't hate the move but I don't really understand releasing a veteran who could help the defense while signing another veteran to be a potential progress stopper for the young guys. It seems to be a mixed message as far as what they think of the team this year.

I never said I like swapping Gilmore for Collins. I am talking about Collins and what he brings to the team independent of cutting Gilmore.

Is it hindsight or what 90% of us were saying all along?
Kinda.
A lot of us wanted to trade Thuney as well
...another in hindsight move.

I do think they wanted to try and keep Thuney and with the cap space they had they thought they had a chance.

I think Owenu's development and getting Brown made the loss of Thuney easier to manage on paper. Plus it was a lot cheaper.

Obviously the move hasn't worked out. Hopefully the line can play better very soon.

Locker room deal. Tampa will sign him and free up Sherman who will come to patriots.

Fair enough. Rappaport basically said they were cutting Gilmore in part because they wanted money freed up for Collins so I think the moves do tie together somewhat.

Per overthecap.com, TB has $3.3 in cap space. They can make it work but if they are going all in, they may have to pay the piper in a few years to give Gilmore the $$ he wants.

This one is on Belichick. I said all along that once Brady was gone, they should have traded Gilmore last year. They could have gotten possibly a second or even a first round pick for him. I didn’t get how they kept an older player who was taking up the most cap space of any player in a several year rebuild year. Coming off a DPOY season, the Pats would have gotten maximum value for him.
Lots of possibilities.

With Tom gone, possible they were protecting against the fan perception of completely throwing in the towel for the 2020 season which is an anti-BB position to take.

It's also possible the trade offers for him sucked because they knew Gilly wanted another big extension and with a smaller 2020 cap made it even more difficult to trade him. His age was also a factor. 31 years old is not exactly a prime for a CB

If he goes to the Chiefs or the Packers he’s cooked and overrated. If he goes to the Bucs then it’s ring #8 baby. Sorry that’s the law.

that's what anyone would say to you......cuz, you know........
Nah, it’s just because you don’t have anything else in the holster. Didn’t you say you were retired? And you still spend the better part of 7 days a week on here? WTF does your wife… sorry… your second wife… do while you’re on here? You think she’s looking for someone else? Or is her coochie like sandpaper these days?

I don’t think they care

Doesn't he have to agree?

Yes, and no.

He doesn’t have a no-trade clause, so the Patriots can trade him anywhere. But I highly doubt a team will accept a trade without talking to Gilmore and making sure he’s going to be motivated, and if it’s for draft comp, working out the basics of an extension. If Gilmore doesn’t want to play out this (cheap) contract this year, the teams are in the same situation as the Patriots with a disgruntled player. So, he can basically force his way out of a trade, though he doesn’t have contractual power to do so.

Teams don’t have much leverage with him. Since he’s injured and not holding out, he might be able to get credit for this season anyway and hit FA next year.

I would have taken a sucky offer over nothing this year. I felt like we should've moved him last year before the draft. I felt like we should've let Thuney walk too. Both decisions cost the team a couple draft picks for the future.

More info presumably from the agent:

Seems to me to be a lot for a new team to take on: Pay me like a top corner, yet I can't/won't play at 75%-80% level, whatever that means?

Now the quad is "good", but nothing on tape to verify that, but pay me like a top corner?

Apparently Breer says he wants to be a Packer.

It may not be likely, but if we beat Houston (which we still should) and KC beats Buffalo, suddenly we're one game back with 12 games to go, two of which are against the Bills themselves. Not exactly the drivers seat, but there's no reason to completely right off that possibility after four games where two of the losses came on a combined 3 points.
Not to mention two of the three losses are against NFC teams.

We get a comp pick for Thuney...

If he really wants to be a Packer I doubt he gets $15 mill. They seem to be generally pretty conservative when it comes to free agents.
