Re: Reiss: Bodden leaves Foxborough with no deal.

incentive-laden.

I wish there was more of these. Fair base salary, and mucho bucks if you perform well. Not this Haynesworth crap where he gets 100 mil, and will spend atleast 2 games a season on the bench, and many plays off (for whatever reason). I know I only get paid when i actually work, and get a raise when ive done well. Sports should be the same way.

ok, im done venting

Re: Reiss: Bodden leaves Foxborough with no deal.

I think something is going to happen with Cassel soon, this cap hit is too huge to take and not being able to make moves.. If this Vrabel trade is not part of something bigger, I will be dissapointed..

Think Hank Poteat quality players for the Patriots. They don't

need good cornerbacks, they need a pass rush. They also need

some salary cap money.

Thank you for saying that, because we need to come to our senses. Bodden's pretty decent but he's not a top tier player, he's not markedly than Hobbs or Wilhite from what I've seen. He would be a nice depth addition, and could maybe start, but we're not screwed because Leigh Bodden didn't sign.

Peter King was on weei saying Bodden is "Just A Guy" - a #5, Nickel guy.

It's King, but still, not glowing praise. We may just need to draft a high-end corner. Not a big deal, I guess, especially if we can get our pass rush woes sorted out in FA.

Well, it depends on which Leigh Bodden would play for the Pats - the mediocre one in Detriot or the rising star from Cleveland. Here is is the write up on him from Scout, Inc. who gives him a 76 grade (a good starter) and have him ranked 4th as free agent CBs after Asomugha, Dante Hall, and Duanta Robinson and higher than Bryan McFadden, Chis McAlister, or Kelvin Hayden:

After being acquired in 2008, Bodden became one of the Lions most consistent defenders. He is a great combination of size, strength and athleticism. He is an instinctive player who leverages receivers well, while keeping proper cushion and body position to react quickly from the perimeter. He has excellent vision of his opponent and the play as it unfolds, which allows him to anticipate, jump patterns and make a play on the ball. He can be physical to jam and re-route receivers from the press position. He has good hips, quickness, agility and speed to turn and run deep with his opponent. Bodden is also a solid open-field tackler with good technique to wrap up his opponent and he keeps his pads over his feet, which enables him to be sure in space. He is an aggressive player who uses his hands well in block protection to keep himself alive to the pile.

Here is their rank of free agent CBs including franchised players:

King isn't a great analyst anyway.

We NEED defense. If we don't get something in the secondary or a pass rusher from FA, this defense is not getting better all though out the draft. I have no problem franchising Cassel, knowing you have a trade partner. But why franchise him if they didn't? We're sitting here without enough money for a backup whos useless to us. I don't think it's valuable spending money on a guy we MIGHT need over guys we do need.

I'm just hoping the Vrabel trade is connected with Cassel somehow. Please let it be.

Hey man. It is Day 2 of free agency. This team will be fine.

If we hadn't franchised Cassel, he would have been a Chief, Viking or Buc yesterday morning.

In BB we trust!

I haven't noticed any inability to make moves. Taylor and Baker are better than the usual vet min pickups. One is a near HOF RB to add to the stable, which is overflowing!
And the other is a quality, younger, starting-caliber, complete TE. Only Taylor is a near vet min buy, but I suspect neither is.

It appears Gaffney went for a career money length. I hope a lot was in the form of a SB, so he actually gets it. But this new deal averages $2.25 million per year; versus the $ 2 million that he got from the Pats, but its 4 years in length. I'm not sure they really wanted to lose Gaffney, but that is the way of FA. Some will overpay.

Bill's usual MO is to NOT participate at all the first week and then swoop in for vet min pickups. Here he has signed two, Baker and Taylor; traded one, Vrabel, and interviewed two others Bodden and RFA Andrews, on the First Day.

He probably has MORE CAP room than yesterday at around $7 million to play with. Trading Vrabel, going completely young & fast, makes me more certain that Tedy and Rodney will retire, opening up another $2 million plus, too.

As much as I'm disappointed he didn't sign yet I do not think we should draft a CB in a high round. A safety or linebacker is much more of a need that should be addressed.

After seeing what kind of cash other CB's are getting I have alot less faith in us getting Bodden I think draft might be our best option along with Wheatley/Wilhite.

I think the draft is the ONLY option. The free agent cornerbacks

the Patriots sign will be like Jason Webster and Fernando Bryant

and won't make the team.

True, this market is just ridiculous for CB's that we're not even sure how good they'll be for us. Hope that first rounder is used on a CB or playmaking safety.

Great point and I will tell you this, they would be paying more for Cassel in a bid against other teams than it will take to sign Cassel long term (see Haysworth). I bet not too far off Cassels tag price.

My Mind Fart. I meant Adam Seward RFA Carolina ILB.
Thanx.

Re: Reiss: Bodden leaves Foxborough with no deal.

Our chances of signing Bodden have to be raised now that we have $15M under the cap.

Re: Reiss: Bodden leaves Foxborough with no deal.

Cassel's large cap hit is going to kill any big free agents coming here. I hope they can get a deal soon. The Jets are getting better. I hope the Patriots can get something for Cassel and fill a few spots.

That's not true. The Pats had 11M in cap space (after trading away Vrabel). They could have signed Bodden if they wanted to, but they probably hesistated to give him a 7M per season deal, which is what the market is after Foxworth signed for 4/28.

If only the Pats had managed to secure Asante before he blew up they could have likely got him long term for 5/42 or something like that, but they waited for Nate Clements to set the market, and of course the dude gets the richest CB contract in history which killed the Pats chances at getting him for reasonable money.

Wonder if now we have the cap money if this is back on?
