Maybe the Patriots surprise a couple of people, like they did last year with the Mesko pick, and take a fullback possibly in the 4th. Here's a few guys who fit the bill for what the Patriots would be looking for.

1. Henry Hynoski, Pittsburgh

2. Owen Marecic, Stanford

3. Stanley Havili, USC

4. Shaun Chapas, Georgia

5. Charles Clay, Tulsa

KUHN!!!!! :rocker:

I've seen Anthony Sherman from UConn described as a great special teams player, which is what it will take for a fullback to make the roster.

The fullback is probably my favorite position in all of football. That said, the motion based tight end blocking the Pats used last season accomplished fullback without a fullback. Nothing better than a good ole iso from the I. Unfortunately those days are coming to a close.

I'd take a fullback over a fifth running back anyday.

I'm not sure it has to be an either/or situation. A guy like Havili, while a fullback in name, could play a jack-of-all-trades role kind of like Sammy Morris.

Don't forget we could have Eric Kettani back this season. I wouldn't expect too much from him after being out of football for a few years, but he has the skillset to be a very versatile player. He's not a traditional fullback, but he is a very willing blocker, runs hard, has good hands and is good on special teams. He could be that jack-of-all-trades that Patchick mentioned.

Let's not forget his little brother in this class, Anthony Allen.

Is there any reason why we can't have the best of both worlds with someone like DJ Williams, who looks like a TE/FB hybrid, which would let us use the I or a different set depending on what would be best against the defense?

No, then again between Gronk and Hernandez and Alge the H-back role isn't really short changed. An alternative assessment of tight end/fullback needs might argue for a player closer to Crumpler/Gronkowski in ability instead.

Unfortunately the closest in this draft class is Marshall's Lee Smith whom I'd rather have on the PSquad transitioning to offensive lineman, so Williams or Virgil Green or Julius Thomas (willing blockers but better receivers) may be the fall back plan. Alternatives to Smith might be Boise State's Tommy Gallardo or their Mike Vrabel knock-off Ryan Winterswyk.
