Four Ways To Prioritize Draft Needs

I'm more interested in a JTripp speed type, than in ILB like Mosely. In fact a JTripp/KPL 4th round would be home run IMO

40 Times

CJ Mosley - 4.63
Jordan Tripp - 4.67

I must admit, I've never seen Tripp as a 'speed type' necessarily, more a rangy linebacker. I like him but we did look at two speed types in FA which would suggest we lean more towards Shazier/KPL. I would be fine with one of those plus Tripp however.

RB - I know that both Ridley and Vareen are FA's after this season, but so what. Whose to say we won't sign one or both next season. They certainly won't cost much. But RB's are so transferable these days and easily plugged in. Think about it. Blunt and Woodhead were both found on the scrap heap and flourished here. Is it really hard to believe that we couldn't replace both in next year's FA period or the draft if necessary. That being said, a late round RB would be fine with me.

This strikes me as a little short-sighted. As far as the QB goes, isn't it better to bring in someone that can learn the offence for a year before he becomes Brady's sole backup even if that means carrying three QBs for a season? Of course, signing Kenny Guiton as a UDFA and putting him on the practice squad is my preferred option but I do think they need a better plan than let's wait until they have to do something next off-season.

The same applies to running backs. I think it would be disastrous to risk having to re-sign Ridley and or Vereen either mid-season or at the end of the season. That gives all the leverage to Ridley and Vereen's agents because without either, we wouldn't have any RBs on the roster. Putting ourselves in such a situation would be foolhardy.
WR - Just too ridiculous to even comment on (and I know you agree )

I don't think BB does. It's the position group they've had the most contact with. And looking at those contacts, I wouldn't rule out a double dip because there's a clear clustering of their interest; a potential first round WR (they've had contact with six potential first round WRs) and an early day three speed receiver (six receivers that fit that description).

Well my issue with Mosley is that all I've seen on him is ILB, but even as an OLB, I think we can do as well with much better value with Tripp or Jones in the 3rd or 4th, rather than Mosley at 29. BTW- 4.6 is blazing fast for a full sized LB and a Tripp/KPL 4th round would be a dream come true for me

I don't want to lose that roster spot for a 3rd QB, though I agree they SHOULD bring in someone to play on the PS and help in camp. You like Guiton, I like Matthews, but the idea is the same.

As far as RB's, I think its very unlikely that we let both of them go, But even if we did, RB is one of those positions where you could do a complete change over in one year between FA and the draft and not suffer. Personally I hope we keep both. BTW- I'm not opposed to adding a RB late in the draft, but the key word here is LATE.

"disastrous" is pure hyperbole, Max. Assuming Ridley becomes a 1200 yd rusher this season, what's that go for? IIRC around $4MM tops. And a 3rd down RB? $2MM or less. So at worst it would cost the Pats $6MM COMBINED to lock up both their top RB's long term. That's neither unlikely or "disastrous."

Quit trying to read tea leaves and take a look at the roster and what they are already spending on WR's. Its not going to happen, Max. No WR in this draft will be seen before the 6th round...if then. If you want to try a double dip, look at TE's or LB's

BTW- is the new quote feature AWESOME.

1. i don't think it unreasonable to call the potential for no RBs on the roster being "disastrous" personally. If BB didn't offer Blount big enough money to re-sign, why will he do so for Ridley and Vereen, one doesn't seem to have the confidence of the coaching staff and the other can't make it through a full season. I think we'll draft one on day three and sign at least one as a UDFA but considering the state of the position on the roster (almost identical to 2011), a double dip in the draft wouldn't surprise me at all.

2. What you call reading tea-leaves is merely me looking at the evidence. Dismiss it all you like, it doesn't detract from the fact that the team are taking a long hard look at WRs in this draft. One would have to be blind not to see that.
