I have to say, the difference on this board vs. last night is pretty hilarious. I read SO many posts that the Patriots had completely blown the draft, that BB was a joke as a personnel evaluator, that the Pats were now behind the Jets & Dolphins, and that it was just unbelievable that the Pats were satisfied with their WR and OLB corps.

After one pick.

But now, all is forgiven! It turns out they planned to keep drafting AFTER McCourty, who knew?

Now that CB isn't being viewed in isolation, it's a much more reasonable pick.

Be fair now. Even those of us who expressly noted that we were only looking at the pick in isolation, and that we expected the next day could very well help make the evaluation more positive, were attacked by the more rabid homers.

It's how the board's been all offseason, on both sides of most issues.

It wasn't that they decided to keep drafting, it's WHO they drafted. The picks in the rounds afterward all filled needs and were solid enough that the first round pick looked like a great move. If the team had moved to take, say, a center, NT, another CB, and a safety today then the pick still would have looked bad. As of right now, though, welcome to New England Devin McCourty.

Cunningham-Burgess is expendable. Situational pass rusher, think of a young Tedi B!
Spikes-this may be the year Guyton gets moved to ST and Alexander is looking for work.
Price-this one is tough. No way he beats out Holt, may take Aiken's spot if we dont carry an extra reciever this year. Injuries might sort this one out.
Lewis-maybe he is the answer at DE....but Jones from Syracuse is still on the board. Time to trade up tonight Bill!

Look i love the sexy pick as much as anyone and hope we trade up for griffen tmrw... just because he looks like a beast. but that is why it's not my job.

Well I for one am back onboard having come to my own understanding of the pick. I wont rehash, but patchick send me your opinion PM, you are logical for a female, LOL. As far as the format, I really like it! More time between stuff, more trades, more trading partners. It will really be detrimental to those without a first round pick however. Can you imagine Thursday if you were in Chicago or Carolina?

In hindsight, taking a CB was the way to go. MCourty was legit late first round talent and there was a significant drop off in talent in the 2nd round.

Yep, when you see the likes of Chris Cook and T.J. Ward going within the next 10 picks, it becomes clear that #27 was the only spot at which this team could upgrade its secondary. And unlike most everybody from #30 on, they actually got full value on a DB.

Or another way to look at it: heading into round 4 you can still pick up Everson Griffen, Ricky Sapp, Corey Wootton or Austen Lane at DE/OLB. The best available CB is Dominique Franks, a nice player with good skills but the quickness and athleticism of a linebacker. No help there.
