Doubt it, going to be very hard for anyone to come here and contribute this late. If we trade him I'd think it'd be next year when he makes a lot more money.

Starters don't need to play STs. Gray is aa 3rd or 4th RB, so he needs to contribute on ST like Sammy Morris did. They like Blount better and probably have a game plan to spread Pittsburgh out, so Gray wasn't needed as much.

While I do see your point, I still maintain mine. LaFell is a starter and he is on ST's. Rodney Harrison and Tedy Bruschi played ST's. While I'm not directly putting Gray in the category of two NE greats, it does still go against your notion that starters don't need to play ST's. Overall, I see what you mean about Gray. I just do not buy entirely that it was related solely, or even mostly, because he offers nothing on STs. I would, however, buy the notion that he is a bit "one trick" and cannot catch well coming out of the backfield.

Agreed, biggest head scratcher of the day for me is Branch sticking. I thought cutting him and saving a couple million against the cap was a no-brainer, but clearly Belichick disagreed.

I think the call might have gone thusly:

Are they being paid and how does that affect cap? Do they count against the 53? Can they be poached by other teams?

PUP and IR-designation to return players don't count against the 53.

Also, I'm 99% certain they do get paid, count against cap + can't be snatched up by other teams.

Miguel did not say they were 800K over. Miquel said that based on HIS projected 53 man roster PLUS Blount, Fletcher and Chris Jones, eht Pats would be 800K over.

Miguel's projection included Wayne and Gray making the team with Lafell also active..

That projection also assumed Branch being cut, FWIW

Why would you think Jones is expendable, especially for a wide receiver? If he is traded, let alone for a WR, I'll eat one of my many Patriots hats.

No way would I consider trading Jones to get a big receiver. Maximizing our talent on the DL is more important than adding a good receiver. Our defensive front needs to be the best it can be considering the potential deficiencies in the secondary. I'd roll the dice with Dobson and someone like Gibson right behind him.

I still think that rumor is BS. Going to take like half the season to learn the playbook unless the guy is Einstein. The great thing about making up Patriots rumors is that nobody cares enough to deny them. It's just too easy.

People on PUP and IR get paid. Unless their is something special in their contracts for such exigencies. Without Gray and Wayne's contracts the difference between what they would have made and their replacements comes off the CAP.
