Field Turf question

Question:
You know that debris that flares up on Field Turf during cuts and sudden stops? the little particles that look like dark sand? What's that stuff called? I'd like to know the official word for it and any colloquial monikers attached to it.

I am working on a writing project and have come up in a dead end on this small point.

I know I have heard it reffered to as tire shreds (but that was more the announcers using something everyone could relate to and not neccessarily what it is really called). I have been on the field and scooped some of it up before and they seem to be very small pelets of rubber but I have no clue what the real term for it is. I didn't actually open any links to look further which I would suggest you do for your project. My homework ended when I saw a potential name for you.

I am not 100% positive, but I think with the new turf installed, the "crumb-rubber" is gone. When I ran the awesome 10K that ended up on the field at Gillette this past 7/4 (run forrest run)...I recall looking for it and not finding it. Maybe I was just running to slow to kick up any crumbs??

I was on the field may 1st and it had it. Im not sure if they took it off, but those crumbs were there.

this make sense as sometimes I can't tell if you are running forward or backward but I guess that beats not at all like me.

I believe they use "crumb rubber" as it is called. It is recycled rubber recycled from tires and other rubber waste. Usually made by freezing a tire in liquid Nitrogen and them breaking it up.

What an awesome job! Freezing old tires then shattering them. I guess like anything, it'd get old after a bit.

It is called a lame attempt to make the field more forgiving.

All the other guys on this list live in a dream world where football players don't get hurt when they the ground but if you look closely you can see joints stretched and twisted as limbs grab on the plastic. Makes me wince but nobody else (besides the players) seem to care.

There is a simple solution to this insanity; grass fields should be used as a recruiting tool by colleges. "Ms. Brown your son will have a better and healthier career if he plays on our nice grass field instead of the green concrete at..."

I have played on field turf all through college and some semi-pro games.....Those fields are HOT....I don't know if it's the field, rubber, combination but some games even sitting on the bench after coming off the field you couldn't put your cleats on the turf or they would heat up instantly....I have played on natural grass and field turf and I by far love grass more.....You can run faster on field turf and it's always even but other than that give me grass......Plus those little rubber pieces get all up in your uniform and are a pain to clean out....
