The franchise/transition designation period starts tomorrow and ends February 22nd.

I don't expect to see any announcements tomorrow, in fact I don't see why any team would tag someone until just before the deadline, unless they have broken off negotiations and want to send a shot across the bow.

Historically, does anyone remember how soon within the period teams start tagging players?

We should have a much better idea how the Samuel negotations are going (or NOT going) by February 22nd.

There will be increased talk of potential/rumored taggings but there is no reason to act before the 22nd because players and their agents "theoretically" can't talk to other teams until the FA period commences in March.

Sometimes it gets done a few days earlier if the team and player are inching in on a deal but figure it will take several more days to get the final details hammered out. That was the case with Adam I believe back in 2002. About a week after he was tagged they announced his 3 year extension and the tag was lifted. I think a lot of fans assumed that would be the case again in 2005 but they never did get a deal done in spite of his large cap hit, and he played under the tag that one season. I think Abraham played under the tag in NY in 2005 because he believed they would eventually get a deal done. He let them know when they didn't and tagged him again in 2006 that he was not going to show up so they best be planning on trading him, which they did.

Nevertheless, I look forward to the first day of hoping for a dribble of news... Damn, seven more months, is it?
