ESPN Removes Reiss's Reaction to Their Article About Patriots Stealing Playsheets

Which may be valid if you are simply referring to the posts themselves, but you went beyond that and denigrated Reiss personally.

You are creating something of a false dichotomy here. There are (or, at least, were) significant differences between tabloid reporting and news reporting. If ESPN is the tabloid, what is the reputable sports news source that Reiss should move on to?

I don't want to question Reiss' integrity it's just hard not too. What else over the last 8 months has he allowed ESPN to cover up. For all we know he has the smoking gun that would end Goodell and ESPN won't let him release it.

You got me on that last point I have admitted several times as this debate has cropped up in different threads that the problem is extremely wide spread in sports journalism. My problems are much larger than Reiss and it is a little unfair of me to put it all on him. But he used to stand above all the problems I have with sports reporting and now he is getting pulled in.

Talking about "mental stability" is a pissy little personal attack. And ****ish. Which is something that you enjoy, obviously, as you've had hundreds of similar spats on this board.

You're the one starting a spat, and ignoring context. I'm the one pointing out the insanity of your position.

Huge difference.

Reiss needs to keep very meticulous records and notes in anticipation of the time he escapes that ratsnest and can write the book that needs writing.

If we can take a brief break from the name calling:

Aluminum Seats, you mentioned that you were a journalist in a previous life.

And, we have plenty of super good lawyers on this site also.

My question is: to work for ESPN, does Mike Reiss have to sign some type of non-disclosure agreement that would prohibit him from writing a book on his ESPN years? I'm sure he is bound by a non-disclosure agreement now, but is he bound by that forever, even well after he leaves ESPN?

If not, that is a book I would love to read!

....However, after seeing how ESPN has excoriated Tom Brady, if Reiss writes a tell-all book on ESPN he may need to go into the witness protection program.

ESPN = Tabloid

If Kronkite took a job with some cheesy tabloid his journalistic integrity would have been shot.

Because I have no way of knowing how much has been changed and what other stuff might be going on. If they take stuff out what are the refusing to let him research and report. Why is this of any value to me if I know he is being censored.

Following him through the years I have no doubts he is more than skilled enough to find other work to support his family. And even still that doesn't change much if he chooses to stay at ESPN that's his right he has a family to look out for. All I am saying is if he is there he can't be the best anymore and I think he should leave because of it.
You know how much has changed because he tells you. Time to give the witch hunt a rest.

Definitely agree on the name calling.

I certainly don't think there would be an NDA, but god knows with ESPN.

That's not true, but I'm happy to end it. Back and forths with you are not remotely enjoyable.

You're not only holding a crazy position on Reiss' professional integrity, you're taking personal shots at me, and being a hypocrite about it, while I was talking specifically about your position on an issue. Instead of looking to me as the bogeyman, look to yourself.

I am sorry I must of missed the part where Reiss said this has never happened before. More probable than not this happened before and he finally spoke out.

Reiss. We are not talking about an athlete who has made millions and has stacked it away, q.v. Mankins, Gronkowski. We are talking about an at will employee in a shrinking industry where cost of basic replacement labor is not prohibitive and barriers to entry for your replacement are relatively low. Add in a daughter with serious medical issues and the writer has to be very cautious about risking the likely outcome of a zero income stream.

Reiss is not someone whose family is so financially secure that they can spend foolishly for garbage like Kraft's latest Yuppie Scum Pen without it impacting their ability to simply get through the year.

I am ever thankful that I was able to live my career with FU money set aside should I be in an untenable position. Most folks do not have that luxury. I do not criticize them for their wise yet uncomfortable prioritization of family welfare over job satisfaction.

Similar things have happened before, and he's spoken out about them before.

I feel for Reiss. Everyone is the media says he is the nicest guy in the media and he is getting crapped on by his own bosses over and over again because of their agenda vs. the Patriots. He deserves far better.

OK, I will, thanks!

It's often the lame cover up attempts that usually bring down the big guys.
Let's hope this happens with ESPN.

No question, people often have to do whatever they can to care for their loved ones.

Terrible. No reason smart people can’t disagree. @MikeReiss one of the best beat guys in America.

@SI_PeterKing Thoughts on ESPN censoring Mike Reiss' reaction to OTL? Seems dubious at best

Deadspin and The Big Lead (USA Today) have picked up the story too.

ESPN is a tabloid, sure, but until/unless Reiss gets a comparable offer elsewhere, it's unreasonable to expect him to quit in protest. If we should be rooting for something, it's for an outlet that doesn't suck to offer him a job.
