Elevations and the open roster spot

That had a lot more to do with the PS rules prior to 2020, which allowed teams to overpay for PS players they really wanted to keep (e.g., they paid Billy Yates as if he were on the 53-man roster), and to increase their salary in mid-season if need be. Squads were also smaller (8-10 players), so it was easier to afford.

Now, not only are PS salaries limited by the CBA to prevent such maneuvers, but even the "protection" system guarantees every player has a chance to sign elsewhere each week.
I think they've walked a decent balance here on the backdrop of an additional game, fewer pre season games or practices for that matter, giving players more of an opportunity rather than languishing on a PS or out of the league entirely (given how the PS used to work)

In general, I'm not going to waste too much time lamenting a PS player who gets a better shot somewhere else

If it was someone good enough to be on the active roster on game day then I'd say that's someone that should have been protected and ON the 53 man roster. That was Wolf's choice - lesson learned perhaps.

I'm wondering if it'll end up being for Tavai when he comes off of IR.
