Edelman offered 3-year deal, he opts to test free agency

Edelman was given a 4 P.M. deadline but Talib can take all
the time he needs. If Talib can get $1 more elsewhere he will walk.

How do the Ravens have ANY cap room?

Suggs extension, Pitta, Monroe? Not to mention Flacco Ngata and Rice.

That's why they had so much turnover last season, to try and better manage the cap.

One thing that can't be disputed--Ozzie Newsome is a decent GM. They'll need to get some offensive weapons though, so that's a no-brainer. Their defense actually improved on the SB winning one, it was the offense that let them down.

And you expected anything else?

The team had to make a decision with regard to Amendola by 4PM (some say midnight). Perhaps, we have a Plan B receiver (Sanders?) who will move on quickly.

The issue is likely nowhere near as clear at CB. Perhaps, we are waiting until Revis is cut to make any ultimatums to Talib. Besides, it is not clear at all that we have another player that we are really ready to move on. Finally, maybe there is someone that Belichick actually prefers to Talib (Verner?, Revis?) and will like to talk to those players.

I still don't see any way they were cutting Danny Amendola this year. I see that as speculation heaped on speculation heaped on home-wrecker (Welker) emotion.

I couldn't agree more. One source releases a story on freaking bleacher report, and all of a sudden it's gospel around here.

There's a decent possibility the "4 pm" deadline was made due to having interest in a backup plan (such as Sanders, etc) just the same.

Weird, Ravens aren't a great fit for Edelman. Hope for his sake that he gets a bunch of guaranteed money, because Joe Flacco is not a good QB for him.

Doesn't seem to be a red hot market for receivers or cornerbacks today...

If we were always definitely keeping Amendola, then the reported offer to Edelman was more than generous, even without the incentives. Is Edelman really worth up to $5M-7M a year to us as a downfield receiver?

BTW, I'm fine with your analysis. The team has Amendola locked into a good deal for both parties.

Edelman are a pretty good fit for the ravens

I will be happy for Julian if he gets a big pay day. He worked his butt off and cashed in at the right time. The pats committed to Amendola and can't over pay for another slot receiver.

Vontae's contract alone has every corner on the market feeling pretty happy, I think. If that's market rate for a pretty good corner, then the rest of them just saw their price tags go up.

Unfortunately, MG, I don't think the Patriots have any players at all
they are ready to move on. Maybe, they are all attending the pro days
checking out draft picks. Too much trouble restructuring contracts to
get a little cap space.

People keep doing this:

Another corner worse than Talib gets X. Therefore Talib will get X+.

But Talib won't make as much as a healthy corner that is a little worse than him.

IMO, people are severely downplaying the importance of his hip issues.

How do you figure? Joe Flacco's positive traits mostly revolve around his arm strength. If you can outrun your man downfield (Torrey Smith, Jacoby Jones), he can get the ball to you. If you're a big, tall guy who can get good position on the defender and make a contested catch (Anquan Boldin, Marlon Brown), he can deliver the ball to you. Since Edelman is neither fast nor big, I don't see the match at all. Not to say that he can't succeed there, but there's pretty much no track record of guys like him producing with Joe Flacco at QB.

I wasn't commenting on what I think Talib will get. I agree that he'll probably be disappointed by the offers that he ends up getting, unless all of the other good corners sign and he can create a bidding war between multiple teams that don't see any remaining FA alternatives.

There doesn't seem to be much a bidding war for CBs or WRs on Day One. If there were teams lined up to pay the asking prices, there would be some signings...

We have plenty of cap space with which to operate today and tomorrow. $15M is a good enough to start. New free agents won't cost any more than $5M each (ditto for re111-signs). Edelman's contract would have had a cap hit of about $3M.

More cap space is easy enough to free up as needed. Cutting Sopoaga, restructuring Mankins and doing something to Wilfork are the big hitters. These three would create $9M-13M more). And none of these moves need to be done before we actually need the cap money.

To put it another way, we likely could sign Talib, Sanders, Blount and Woodyard and be well within our $15M.

Are you really suggesting that Sproles is not good enough to be one of our five running backs?
He's a third-down guy whose only special teams role would be returner. Who would you dump?

Andre Robert received 4-years/$16 million from the Redskins, that puts Edelman in line for a serious payday.
