Contract Details for Saints Quarterback Drew Brees

So Brees signed a 2 yr $50m deal with $23 guaranteed. Brady got a 2yr $50m contract with $50m guaranteed with some incentives thrown in that could add another $4-5m per year for making it to top 5 passing stats. Brees' deal is more team friendly but Brady took a FA deal. Would Brady have taken a similar deal to stay with Pats. Seems like the way Brees' deal is structured he can be released after a year (only $23m guaranteed, essentially 1 year's money) while Brady wanted both years guaranteed like he got with Bucs. Were Pats right to insist on a year by year deal? Why was Brady adamant about 2 years. He could have moved on to some other team in a year's time. Pats reportedly offered 1 yr contract for $23m, same guaranteed amount Brees got. Could they have negotiated better and offered a 2 year deal like Saints did with little bit more guaranteed. Did Pats figure no other team would offer Brady this kind of money.

Meanwhile now we are a 4-int Stidham loss away from full blown QB crisis.

Why would Brady have accepted half the guaranteed money that he got?

I remember joking that comparing Brady to Brees was crazy since their stats were so far apart. Brady ranked 27 th. v. 1st in completion percentage.

Then Brady gets more money. Oh well . QB money went kooky like 4 years ago.

The main difference is Brees said he would only play for the Saints or retire so the Saints had all the power with his deal to do it however they wanted. Plus, from every indication, it appears this will be Brees last season as Payton wants Taysom as his starter next year and will most likely have him split snaps this year with Brees. Basically Brees is in the same situation as Eli was last year. He probably starts the first couple of games and Hill gradually takes over.

Brady on the other hand was a FA who has said for years now that he wants to play to age 45 and perhaps beyond. So I would think a 2 year deal was the minimum he would accept as opposed to the year to year. Good for him that he got the whole thing guaranteed but when you are the GOAT you get those types of things.

Still assumes taking on that much salary at the QB position in 2020 made sense. Our roster isn't that good as it is. Imagine how much worse it would be if we signed 0 of the players we've signed this offseason (particularly McCourty and Thuney). It's not like having Brady last year made our offense good.

Brady or not, 2020 wasn't going to be our year.

Brees is a one time champ who has had the ball in his hands with the chance to win, only to come up short, three years in a row (and most of his career). He’s « lead » his team to so-so records on several occasions. He might not even be worth what he got.

After 2009, I think we all saw him as having Brady-like qualities. Time would prove him to be more of a Peyton.

I believe that the Saints have been moving Brees money around quite a bit so they will soon be paying a substantial dead money cost. The Pats could have retained Brady and manipulated his contract to minimize this years cap hit but would need to bite the bullet in the next year or 2. Seems like BB preferred to takes his financial lumps this year and start 2021 with a ton of space. He clearly did not think Brady at the numbers he wanted was worth it in both the short and long term. Am hopeful he made the correct decision.

So if all goes as planned Brady will spend all of 2021 breaking Brees all-time records.

Why would Brady have accepted half the guaranteed money that he got?

Since he could likely get the same amount again in a year anyway barring some catastrophic injury. In Brady played for the Pats for a yewr for $25m he would still be able to get a 1 yr $25m contract in a year’s time somewhere in the league, maybe even with Pats again.

and we won’t care since he’s not on our roster

Fck Kraft.

They offered Brady 1 year for $23m. Per year number wasn’t that far off. They could have throw some incentives in as well.

The NEP never offered TB12 1yr @ $23m. The actual rumor is BB told Tom it would be a 1yr deal at LESS than the $23m he made last year.

This is relevant b/c it shows BB didn't really want Tom back so saying they should have offered what Brees got is irrelevant....and Tom didn't want to stay either.

If it's all about the money then he shouldn't.

If it's not all about the money, it's a more complicated situation.

Brady already has more money than God. He made his choice.

Brees has been/is personally invested in the city of New Orleans.

Belichick didn't think that Brady was worth $50M guaranteed. I think that it is really that simple.

If Brees had to give $15M of his salary to NO charities as part of his contract, he would still play for NO and no one else. The connection between Brees, NO management and the city is truly impressive.

Brady did sell tickets ‘for charity’ to watch him answer prescripted questions from the corpse of Jim Gray
