This has an opening post with good commentary and information, which we definitely recommend reading.

If you compare Drake Maye with Patrick Mahomes' 2018 sophomore MVP season through 7 games:

Maye: 152/202 (75.2%), 1744 yards (11.5 YPC), 12 TD, 2 INT, 200 yards rushing with 2 TD. Pats 5W and 2L.

Mahomes: 153/251 (60.9%), 2223 yards (14.5 YPC), 22 TD, 5 INT, 120 yards rushing with 2 TD. Chiefs 6W and 1L.

Mahomes had 22 TD vs. 12 for Maye, and 2223 yards vs. 1744 yards. He was averaging about 3 more YPC. But he had 5 INT vs. 2, and was averaging 7 more passing attempts per game, with a much lower completion rate.

Overall, Maye not doing too badly against what was probably the best statistical season in the past decade.
Mahome also took over for a playoff team the year before. Much more talent around him, Hill and Kelce in their prime.

I haven't looked at YAC, but I would not be shocked if much of the yardage difference between Mahomes' and Mayes' yardage came in terms of YAC. Kelce, Hill, and Hunt were big-time YAC guys.

Mayes is averaging 75% completion, 250 ypg (280 with rushing) and 2 TDs per game.

I was just looking at the NFL QB stats and it occurred to me that there are a ton of QBs performing at a high level right now, and also a bunch of QBs who teams are married to (Kyler Murray, Bryant Young, etc.). Effectively, most of the league has their guy right now.

I'll list the QBs I'm referring to below.

But for all the hype about each of these guys being MVP candidates or recipients in prior years and/or this year, for the vast majority of them we don't really know how they'll perform in the most high pressure situations of the playoffs. We have a lot of info on guys like Matthew Stafford, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Jared Goff, etc. We have a little info when it comes to CJ Stroud and J Daniels.

But for the vast majority who are being hyped? NADA.

Drake Maye, Justin Herbert, Daniel Jones, Dak Prescott, Trevor Lawrence, Bo Nix, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield (he has a few games, actually), Jordan Love, Caleb Williams...

Many of these guys will not show up when the going gets tough. In fact, look at Jared Goff. He has a massive question mark on his back.

Joe Burrow is hurt, but I'd say his postseasons have been spotty. Some very good, some choke jobs.

Mayfield won a playoff game with the ****ing Browns. He's forever etched into 'has it' lore, to me.

“For the first time, football people view Maye as possibly being a guy,” an exec from another team said. “He has always looked the part because of his measurables, but the game had not slowed down enough for him to develop that stuff.”

A lot of guys win a playoff game. I mean, Jared Goff got the Rams to the Super Bowl, but I am not convinced he is "nails" as a playoff QB.

Trent Dilfer.
Need I say more?

I'm not sure what you're saying here.

There have been a lot of underwhelming Super Bowl QBs. Nick Foles, many, many others.

I'm saying that a lot of the QBs are getting hyped as great QBs (Trent Dilfer, Foles, Chandler, etc. never got that), but all this hype is really only deserved when a QB shows they can do it in the playoff clutch.

As I recall Dilfer’s status benefitted from the afterglow of that Super Bowl for a couple of years before perceptions reverted to reality.

I’m saying that a lot of times departures from previous form are regarded as trends not outliers. Dilfer was an example of that. Kirk Cousins may be a more recent one. It remains to be seen how many of the current crop of hot names will follow that same pattern.

I think we are saying very similar things. I’m just looking at Dilfer as one who flashed in the playoff clutch well enough to get it done once but didn’t stand the test of time repeatedly.

One thing to improve on is not taking as many open field hits. Throw it away for preservation.

Love what Maye said yesterday about not being a "Checkdown Charlie"

Lol.

Nothing wrong with being a checkdown charlie when the situation calls for it. Better than forcing things and turning the ball over.

I know: spat up my drink around the dinner table after he said it. He caught me off guard: Maye have a sense of humor.

Agreed, but I think he was more referring to focus to keep his eyes downfield, something Vrabs and staff challenged him with.

He's too young to be a checkdown charlie, although you're right.
This is the set-up part of his career, so defenses will respect his deep ball forever.
Then, when the legs start to go, that's when you turn into a Checkdown Charlie like Mahomes or Roethlisberger.

Either that or you turn into Josh Allen or Brett Favre, and just try to heroball your way to wins every week.
