Drake Maye has arrived . . .

I'd be curious as to Diggs' perspective on Stroud vs Maye.
I think the difference is Maye has ascended since his rookie season, Stroud has regressed a little since his rookie of the year season. Two excellent young QBs though.

So I don't want to tap the breaks on Maye but... While his stats look amazing, and they are, how much offensive production are they leading to? For instance Maye had a great day today but it only lead to 24 offensive points. You'd think with that stat line we'd be putting up 30 a game every time, but we aren't.

To me this is a bit of a minor concern. Perhaps part of it is the approach. If he passed 35 times a game they'd score more.

Most important stat is putting up Ws.

You’re right, Josh is calling a balanced mix of runs and passes, and the runs aren’t productive. So that deflates the output. But it sets up the situations that Maye exploits to build those stats.

Or, TL;DR: it’s nothing to worry about.

Interesting, thanks for this ! Always wondered. I thought it had to do with positive results and negative results as well.
ESPN's QBR does that, but passer rating has been just these #s for decades at the NFL level.

Actually, QB rating is based on exactly four factors, each weighted equally. To get a perfect rating, a QB needs:

* ≥77.5% completion percentage
* ≥12.5 yards per attempt
* ≥0.11875 TDs per attempt
* No interceptions

Why those specific numbers, I have no idea. But those are the numbers. He needed another TD and ~65 yards.
how is it “perfect” if youre only completing a little over 3/4 of your passes?

According to this hes tied for least turnovers amongst qbs. So we have

5th in yards
T-8th in passing tds
T-5th in total tds
4th in passer rating
2nd in completion %
T-1st in least turnovers

And looks like hes top 5 in most or all of the advanced stats like epa.
Still bothers me we lost to geno smith again.. also is it me ? Why am I underwhelmed with the play of gonzo and Davis lately??..help me out patsy..

The Patriots lack talented play makers. It's obvious. Compare the Patriots to other teams:

Colts
Johnathan Taylor >>>>> Rham
Warren > Henry
WR is pretty even

Detroit
St Brown > Diggs
Williams > Boutte
better RBs than NE by a decent margin

Dallas
Much, much better WRs than NE.
More production from the TE
much more productive RB

Bucs
Irving > Rham
Bucs WRs are much, much better than the patriots. Theres no comparison.

Seattle
Better running game
Smith Ngjiba is far better than any Patriot WR

KC
They don't have the greatest set of weapons but they still have a top 5 of all time TE and the WRs on each team are about even.

Those are the teams scoring more than the Patriots. I know it's blasphemy to talk about around here but skill position players do help the offense. The Patriots success has been due to the stellar play of Drake Maye and the soft schedule. Diggs, Henry and Boutte deserve credit, they are playing well, but it is probably a middle of the pack set of skill players.

I listed the teams better than the Pats in ppg. Teams who are scoring less also have better weapons - Teams like the Rams (Puka, K Williams, Adams), eagles (Brown, Barkley, Smith), Vikings (Jefferson, Addison), Bengals (Chase, Higgins), Falcons (London, Bijan). You could make a case for others as well like Denver and the Chargers.

That amazing thing with Josh is that he does not put all his cards on tape u til he absolutely needs it. They are playing chess and it is a marathon. I just don’t want QB taking hits when we have a sizable lead. Check down city baby.

Im ok with tossing week 1 out, clearly an outlier and looking like one of those ‘extended preseason’ games. Both teams are nothing like they showed that day. Gonzo and Davis look like the rest of the d to me sans barmore/williams. Play like ass early on and then buckle down later.

Like Vrabel said in the locker room speech, they’re really close but the best performance is yet to come.

I'm very worried about his mechanics. Felger was right, they should have released him when he threw 4 picks in an unpadded practice. If only they had taken Marvin Harrison Jr., or Joe Alt when they had the chance????

That loss annoys me as this team realistically should be undefeated. Your right the theme has been the defense starts out slowly and then adjust. I'd be nice for them to start out the way they tend to finish. Guess I'm just not picking..

If you compare Drake Maye with Patrick Mahomes' 2018 sophomore MVP season through 7 games:

Maye: 152/202 (75.2%), 1744 yards (11.5 YPC), 12 TD, 2 INT, 200 yards rushing with 2 TD. Pats 5W and 2L.

Mahomes: 153/251 (60.9%), 2223 yards (14.5 YPC), 22 TD, 5 INT, 120 yards rushing with 2 TD. Chiefs 6W and 1L.

Mahomes had 22 TD vs. 12 for Maye, and 2223 yards vs. 1744 yards. He was averaging about 3 more YPC. But he had 5 INT vs. 2, and was averaging 7 more passing attempts per game, with a much lower completion rate.

Overall, Maye not doing too badly against what was probably the best statistical season in the past decade.

I might have talked to someone about that last night in the know.

It turns out, MANY of the Raiders players are spending every night out on the strip for home games. Week 1, of course, they weren't in Vegas. There's nothing to do in Foxboro.

Well.. there's always the ground round.. or the end zone motel.. wait.. I'm going back to the 90s...

Yeah, Ground Round is long gone. I think that Papa Gino's on Route 1 is still there though. My parents used to take me and my sisters there every Friday when we were kids living in Mansfield.

I think a huge part of it is style and how the games are going. Crazy thing is as well as Maye is playing he has yet to throw for 300 yards in a game. Now yards and TDs thrown don't always equate to wins, Stafford on the lions was the King of putting up stupid stats late in a losing effort, but they are an indicator of what kind of game was played. For a QB to get the kind of stats everyone agrees are Elite, they have to be in a shootout where the other team is scoring a lot or very quickly. The only game they asked Maye to throw 40+ times is the worst loss of the season.

I have been very impressed with his consistency, 20 for 25 220ish yards passing 50 yards rushing, 2 TDs no turnovers has become his week in week out expectation. You are going to win a lot of games against the majority of the NFL with a stat line like that. Sure to be an Elite offense like the 07 Pats you have to put the ball in the air more, but playing consistent mistake free football is the foundation NEEDED for a young QB. I am completely fine with them only asking him to play a clean game with a moderate work load. To what I believe your point was, yes there will come a game against an Elite offense where our defense couldn't catch a cold. Can Maye continue his current numbers when he IS the entire offense. Brady could, the one time we've asked Maye to we lost badly. We will need a game, probably in the playoffs, where his stat line needs to be 34/45 375 yards 4 TDs 1 or less INTs.

Biggest take away for me is I think the coaching staff is doing an amazing job of working with what they have. IMO they recognize this isn't a top tier talented team, and they have to play careful mistake free football. That includes what they do with Maye, not asking him to put up Elite QB numbers just good solid week in week out give us a chance to win football. And he's killing it. Which is very exciting for where he might be in 3 or 4 years.

Yes.. I went there a time or two.. and I may or may not have even visited the motel 6 a few time on rt. 1 as well.. friend of mine lived right off rt. 1 and he told me he could see the team practicing back in the 90s.. ah.. the good Ole days...
