Ian posted a really good break down of Drake Maye in the McDaniels Offense... take a few minutes to read it...

This is something I touched on yesterday in the training camp thread... From Ian's article:
While most of his throws were short attempts on Day 2, there’s clearly a method to McDaniels’ madness. The focus has been on trying to get positive yards on each series of down...

They are obviously working on a series of short positive yardage plays... not worrying about the deep downfield plays yet... those will come, but the base of the offense - quick, positive yard passes that focus on skill position players making plays after getting the ball is the base to start from... is this a return to the dink & dunk offense? in a sense, yes... but i think with guys like Diggs and the potential of the rookie WR Kyle Williams there will be a greater percentage of mid range to deep passes added to the mix as the team progresses further, as Maye & Co get more comfortable with what McDaniels is doing...

where this is really going to help is on first downs... If we can get back to the 2021 production levels, its a great stage setter for third and even fourth down conversions... compare the mac jones numbers in 2021 to Drake Mayes numbers last year...

75 more attempts (keep in mind 17 games vs 12 games) , but double the yardage, 4 tds vs 1... but most telling is the adjusted net yards per pass attempt, a full 3 yards more in 2021... that is a massive difference in terms of production... If we see numbers like that, this team will be offensively competitive...

Got to like the results so far... Maye has been hitting his all marks, and the receivers have looked better than advertised... while we are just two days into Camp, we can't ask for more than that...

Not to mention RPO: though Maye could be an exclusive Pocket passer with his skillset. But I can't wait to see the design run play calls from certain formations. Imagine a Brady who could actually run; that's probably what we have in Maye.

The lack of outlets in the offense last year really stood out especially with such a porous line. I think Van Pelt's offense was a good offense that did not have the wr's or line to actually run successfully and Van Pelt did not adjust outside his comfort zone. Dink and dunk to move the chains, when you have to, is a staple of McDaniel's offense.
Can't wait to see the pads come on next week and see where the line is at.

They definitely need to let the reigns out a little on the rushing. Last year was frustrating how much they held him back in that regard especially in the short yardage situations.

Obviously we still want him being careful but it's a skill set that he has and I'm excited to see it used a little more.

If you watch Forged in Foxboro 2 when the coaches are all talking. Josh says you take the open easy completion for positive yardage rather than having to thread the needle to potentially pick up a few more. That's his philosophy in a nutshell... positive, high percentage plays on 1st down, long extended drives, keep moving the chains. I bet they also lull teams into trying to counter this approach and then take a big shot downfield.

last year there were 35 rpo plays... 30 passes... 5 runs...

When josh was last here, Mac ran 32 rpo plays, and he wound up throwing on all of them

Not quite sure how well the rpo will be integrated here...

Three and a half yards is not a big gain. But what’s three plays of 3.5 yards each? It’s another set of downs. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Time will tell what type of career Maye will have, but there's no question he's got the football IQ and a maturity well beyond his years

McDaniels is the right guy to shape the offense around him.

McDaniels is not a Head Coach, it has been proven but he is a terrific Offensive Coordinator for the short pass throwning QBs that the Patriots have and have had going back to day one for Brady. I am glad he is there.

The futures bright the futures Maye/McDaniels

Let's look at it like this in McDaniels case: going from Mac Jones to Drake Maye is like moving from the out house to the penthouse.

And will Never get a shoot at that Title again: Maye's OC for Life.

could be, but based on the way josh calls an offense, the rpo isn't used all that much... even with cam newton the rpo was not used all that much... 13 passes, 23 runs...

if we compare that with the play action, its used on average 3x more...

Whats the difference between the two? The blocking scheme that is used... Play Action uses a pass blocking scheme, RPO uses a run blocking scheme... Given Josh's ability to design and use pass blocking schemes, play action seems likely to be the more favored option...

doesn't mean they can't or won't use the RPO given Drake Mayes ability to run... I just don't think it will be a huge part of the offense... McDaniels could absolutely add more RPO to the mix... and that could add an exciting element to the Pats O this yearand in the years moving forward...

I'll take your last paragraph please...the Bills have design run plats for Josh Allen... Drake Maye is built like Allen. I think Josh is going to unlock him; the sky's the limit.

@Pape hey buddy is media allowed at practice Today?? Will we get any tweets Today??

believe it or not, the Bills dont run all that much rpo... like us, they use more play action... Baltimore uses a ton of rpo... they are about 50/50 with the rpo/play action mix...

you may be correct. But I think that if Vrabel fails as the Head Coach that in 2028, Josh McDaniels will get the nod to move from Offensive Coordinator to Head Coach of the Patriots as long as Robert Kraft stays alive through 2028. The Patriots will try another rebuild, that's my opinion. A Cheap Solution for the Krafts.

Today being Saturday will be a full hard practice. No Practice on this Sunday. So no media today during full practice. Today will be the most serious practice so far.

Will No Hands Ja'Long Polk give it a shot today in practice as his first day? Maybe his minor injury to his shoulder will keep him out again. He is another N'Keal Harry. They better cut Polk before he becomes an IR keeper.
