Let's think about perspectives on a draft.

If in the second year from a draft, out of the team's top five picks, there are two players who have had an Pro Bowl level season, another solid starter, one MEH 53 roster filler, and a cut, is that a good draft?

It is not the 1974 Steelers draft, but would most teams be very happy for that draft.

Peter King's take on such a draft:

Round Draft spot Player Summary of NE career
1 27 CB Devin McCourty Great first year, beat often this year. Overall a plus.
2 47 TE Rob Gronkowski A phenom. Big star. One of the best Pats picks in years.
2 53 DE J. Cunningham Done nothing for NE's rush. One sack in almost 2 years.
2 62 LB Brandon Spikes Passable MLB. Nothing special.
3 90 WR Taylor Price Two years, four games played, three catches. Debacle.

I have a hard time calling a late 3rd rounder a debacle, but beyond that, this is not too different than a decent chunk of the board's take.

Perspectives....

We also got a great pick in the 4th with Aaron Hernandez, a solid 5th with Zoltan Mesko and a solid 7th in Brandon Deaderick.

I actually consider this the draft that saved the Patriots. Mistakes aside, sit back and imagine the Patriots today with no Gronkowski and no Hernandez.

I refuse to do so. :snob:

I would throw Kyle Love in too. Signed as a UFA. Outstanding pickup. Dane Fletcher hasn't shown as much. But, was useful when healthy. I'd like to forget about Sergio Brown. But, he was ok last year as a ST and part-time player.

Spot on. The only failure for me is Price. I held out high hopes for him but i guess it just didn't click. But as people have pointed out thats a 3rd rounder and it's not like we whiffed on a 1st.

Like price i still hold out hope for Cunningham at OLB when we go back to the base 3-4.

Last year's 14-2 season we had McCourty, Gronk, Spikes, Cunningham, Hernendez, Mesko all as starters and then you add in Deadrick and love who are starters this year (but take off Cunningham) on a team that is 9-3.

Very good drafting to make up for some middle of the road years for the pats.

We should be very, very happy with the 2010 draft.

The problem is with the other drafts...when you look at the players that were available that we didn't take. The jury is still out on the 2011 draft (though I love Solder and Vereen already) but the 2006-2009 drafts are all very questionable.
