here a nice article on financial aspects of the 2017 NFL Draft:
Agent's Take: The top five financial takeaways from the 2017 NFL Draft

its hilarious to see BB operate in this league . making great use of his economics studies
(and great instinct for mass psychology)

1. the league unanimously declares OL class weak . teams that desperately need OL unload ton of money and cap space in free agency and pass in draft (for the first time in modern NFL draft history, an offensive lineman wasn't selected in the first 15 picks) . BB calmly waits that formerly projected 1st rounders fall to him in 3rd and 6th and adds a couple of UDFAs for good measure (of course it was position of certain need in view of 2018 but still). is it too far-fetched to believe Dante will make a couple of starting tackles out of this group saving the team load of draft capital and cap space? and the league will still wonder what sort of trickery the pats are using to have all - improved championship roster, healthy cap space & full set of picks + some comps going foreward..

quote from article:
The unprecedented free-agent spending spree in the trenches .. Kevin Zeitler establishing a new salary benchmark for offensive guards was expected. He received a five-year, $60 million contract from the Browns containing $31.5 million of guarantees. The Chargers gave Russell Okung a four-year, $53 million contract containing $25 million fully guaranteed at signing to make him the NFL's highest-paid offensive lineman with a $13.25 million average yearly salary. Matt Kalil landed a five-year, $55.5 million deal with $25 million of guarantees from the Panthers after missing most of the 2016 season because of a hip problem. By contrast, Bolles' four-year rookie deal should be approximately $11 million.

2. the league unanimously declares that this is the deepest RB class in years so we all expect Pats will take one RB for themselves (after they so outrageously passed last year). instead BB takes aggressive approach in FA bringing in two RBs, paying most money for the position in recent history + one draft pick (plus extending White for more money anybody would expect). still the combined amount for one of the best, deepest and most versatile RB groups in the league is projected at (provided Lewis stays) - 10.5M in 2017 and 5.5M in 2018 (Gillislee, White, Foster).

quote:
Running back salaries reached a peak in 2012. The average of the top five running back contracts was approximately $10.85 million annually, and contained almost $26 million in guarantees where the average length was five years. LeSean McCoy is currently the NFL's highest-paid running back. The five-year contract he received in 2015 when the Eagles dealt him to the Bills is worth $40.05 million with $26.55 million in guarantees. Le'Veon Bell was franchised by the Steelers in March for $12.12 million.

This decline in running back salaries has created a financial quirk that doesn't exist with any other playing position. Running backs taken early in the draft are paid among the league's highest-paid ball carriers despite the rookie wage scale being designed to prevent it from happening.

3. It must come as no surprise that they used 2 of the 4 picks on the most expensive position on the market - edge rushers. (yes 1 DE was a certain need but not many projected double dip). BB certainly wouldn't like to find himself in a position to pay 82.5M w 51M guaranteed for a single player (unless that player is franchise QB). From the CJ, JC, HT trio he kept the best & cheapest player (using full advantage of economically undervalued position).

Of course many other things come in play in this decisions but using advantage of economic opportunities (using anomalies and going against trends while setting new ones) is blatantly visible and its just unbelievable how most of the league cannot grasp that. of course having the capability of making it work on the field is a big part of the equation. Having great GM and great coach in one person certainly helps..

just a reminder of the fact that inefficiencies in the market were one of the biggest reasons Kraft's came into the league . (from King's article about the Patriot way):
The Patriot Way: Want to Win a Super Bowl or Not? | The MMQB with Peter King

The new salary cap that had just been introduced, the younger Kraft explained, was one of the biggest reasons they purchased the club. He believed there were inefficiencies in the market and used a hypothetical to illustrate his point.

Player A makes $2 million per year and is 10% better than Player B, who makes $500,000. Too many teams, Kraft argued, were committing to the marginally better player at the higher price. The Patriots, he said, would prefer the cheaper player in nearly every instance. Bill Parcells, the Patriots’ coach at the time, generally agreed with this principle, but it was Belichick, taking over six years later, who made it the team’s doctrine. By winning almost immediately, with a Super Bowl in his second season, Belichick wrestled full roster control away from Andy Wasynczuk, the senior vice president and chief operating officer who contributed in negotiations at the time of his hiring, according to a source with knowledge of the team’s affairs at the time.
