I'm with the consensus.

The Pats definitely don't need a single rookie on offense, and would indeed have to go through some gyrations to make room for one.

On defense, where we do have openings, we also already have young players working their way up. DL is full of them, with Love, Deaderick, Brace, Pryor. LB now is as well. DB has fewer, given how many recent picks washed out, so I'd like to see at least one pick there. But that's the only remaining draft need I really see.

Absolutely not.....for THIS season. I said early on that because of the good work in FA building depth, anything more than 4-5 picks would be a waste. I'm fine, in fact more than fine with picking up a couple of DBs, or a DB and DT and getting this part of the off season over with.

That being said, I wouldn't want it to become a permanent strategy. But for this year its the right way to go.

we'll see if they drop back a few spots and pick up another pick, but it depends on what you mean by bothered.
I'd rather take what we've got right now than trade it for some lower round picks, but sure, if we could get some free lower round picks on top of our current haul I'd like that better.

No. We have plenty of depth right now at most positions. Hard to see too many more rooks making the roster. I think 2 picks is perfect actually maybe a DB and OL.

I would've liked one lower pick to maybe add RB depth with the loss of BJGE but hopefully that can be addressed by signing Hightower, Grant, or someone similar.

It doesn't bother me ,I like the way things worked out this year, assuming the guys we picked are as good as they are made out to be.I am also of the opinion that the later rounds aren't useless as the poll suggests. After all,we have grabbed a few gems from the later rounds.

The trade down does bother me, however. Seems like a long way to go for a 5th rounder.

Not in the least. It must be frustrating for BB & the coaching staff to make cuts of draft picks like Lee Smith, 5th rounder, and others who end up w/ other teams. so the high quality rejects of the Pats TC becomes a feeder to a roster spot w/ other teams.

BB decided quality and impact are more important. Bravo!

In response to the the thread title/question, why would I be bothered about a "lack of a 7th round pick"????

We GOT our 7th round pick tonight - - we just took him 5 rounds early.

In my view there are three ways to find quality players in the draft.

Volume. Volume. ... And Volume.

Wine drafts, for all the research and educated guesses that organizations make, is a crap shoot. Yes, no doubt first round choices have a much better chance of making the team and bring quality contributors, but we all know how many high picks have been busts, even for the Patriots.

By the same token we all know the names of thos Patriots have been found among the undrafted or late rounds... A former beloved 8th round pick (which now would be undrafted) and a 6th round QB who turned out to be ok.

In many ways I like the rookie free agents better than the late round picks because they were actively courted and tend to want to find the best match with a team as opposed to the late round picks who have no active role where they go.

We have 90 roster spots. BB will fill the ranks with enough volume among the rookie free agents to ensure he's got some good competition and finds some good players

Well now we see the danger of stripping Belichick of his sixth and seventh round picks. If he targets a seventh rounder, but doesn't have the pick, then he grabs him at 48. You see what he does if he cannot trade around.

The next time the Patriots screw up, Goodell should dock them their sixth and seventh rounder, knowing it's just as effective.

I do wish the Pats had a rookie WR in the pipeline that could turn out to be something. Someone who might replace Branch.

Im glad they were bold and moved up for players they wanted in the 1st round. That took balls and wasnt the safe way out by trading down to lower expectations. Hopefully, the Pats landed 2 Studs there that will be playmakers for this defense for years to come.

It's been said already but there simply isn't enough roster space for the 10+ picks draft Belichick has had in recent years. Contrary to critic belief, BB wasn't just mindlessly trading down and hoarding for no reason in recent years. Because of how little depth and quantity the 2006, 2007, and 2008 draft produced, he used the 2009, 2010 and 2011 drafts to reload the roster and compensate for that. Now that the roster has sufficient depth, he changed his philosophy and is going after impact players at need positions.

The one criticism I have is agree with the post above this one. This draft and the previous draft were loaded with talent at WR and it woulda been nice to grab one.

Well, the vote is kind of worthless now since we traded our 2nd 2nd-rounder for a couple of later round picks, but I would have voted no, but not because late round picks are worthless, but because I thought the Pats were throwing the draft strategy of the last few years out the window (trade down to pick up more picks in the future and in later rounds) and going for broke by trading UP TWICE in the first round, which I liked.

Finally, a draft that was exciting for Pats fans rather than a disappointing wait by the TV only to have the team trade out of the first round (I know it hasn't been that bad, but it's been close lately). Plus, the guys they got in the first round looked BIG and FAST! Feels good to me, regardless of the stretch all the experts are claiming in the 2nd round with the safety. BB hits on those supposed head scratcher picks more than others.

GO PATS!! Great draft! (fan-wise anyway, and hopefully teamwise!!).
