FWIW, Michael Lombardi lists Red Bryant - who the Pats pursued and missed out on prior to signing Fanene - as one of his top 5 "elite" DEs in the NFL, along with Jason Pierre-Paul, Jared Allen and Julius Peppers:

Those who are surprised that Bryant qualified as a blue-chipper should talk to any team that has tried to run the ball in his direction. He is a dominant player.

Wilfork/Bryant/Love/Brace/Deaderick would have been a darn nice "big" DL unit. Oh well ... given what he cost, signing him may have precluded deals such as extending Gronk and Ahern. But it would have been nice.
