Ok, and that's fine. But people need to realize the difference between affordability and value, and that seems to have gotten horribly distorted here over the years. We see this happen with a lot of players and positions when these discussions come up.

    Player's likely worth on market = X
    Patsfans.com posters' concept of player/position worth = Y

Far too often, these discussions founder because X is so much higher than Y.

He's the best elusive back we've had in recent years. Probably better than Woodhead and Burkhead and Beavis and Butthead. That guy pulls yards out of nowhere. I will definitely miss him!

Lewis is very productive undoubtedly but I think he's not coming back. Paying that kind of money for RB is not a good idea. Finding another, elusive RB is not impossible. Moreover we've got some backups like White,Gillislee and maybe Burkhead. Let me get this straight I like so much Dion but keeping him is not priority. TB12 protection is the key. One injury can ruin the whole season and his splendid career. Let's invest money in OL, try to keep Solder,Waddle or Fleming and bolster our front 7 and secondary.

The SB showed that we need a power back. Could have used some Blount Force Trauma.

I want him back, but that is one guy who deserves to get hazard pay. Crappy qb nobodies are getting $15-20 mil. For the load he is able to shoulder....

    PAY THAT MAN HIS MONEY!

    not us....some other team

To me SB showed that even if you have a a g.o.a.t with no defense you cannot win the title.

10th in the league in rushing yards in 2017
6th in the league in rushing TDs (as usual) in 2017

    Without a "power back".

When Solder returned to his form, the 2017 OL was probably our best unit since 2012. We started plowing holes vs. even the best run D in the NFL in Philly & James White was doing sizeable damage on the ground.

Broken down Chris Ivory just got 2 years 5.5 million from the Bills to be their backup. A ton of teams have money. IMO Lewis AND Burkhead are likely gone due to $.

I think White in an expanded role + a rookie in this loaded draft is the cost effective way to go. You can basically get Nigel Bradham or most of Talib with the $ Lewis will get. All about opportunity cost.

An anonymous source tells CBS Sports that he's looking at a $6.5 million annual contract by two of the teams most despised teams by our franchise. Yeah, that don't look like someone's agent is trying to pump up his client. These sports writers are either too dumb to realize they're being used or they don't care.

For me it is not about the injury history. I just do not think a rb, even one as good as dion, is worth that much.

Injury wise, dion had the prepatriot stuff a few years back that has not hinder him in his time on this team. He then had the acl year which could happen to anyone.

I look at the numbers Bell is asking for and even the numbers he is getting to be kind of mind boggling.

There's video of Belichick hunting for his replacement at the combine. Hopefully he'll be able to grab him.

Y'all are buying what they're selling. Of course price is a consideration but, a tiny RB who has been injured more often than not is not going to have 9 teams throwing millions at him. Let's see.

......The SB showed us we needed a corner back. Could have used some Butler Force Trauma...

    ...Some coverage LBs...

And most importantly, Jordan Richards outside of the stadium...

I say he is worth that amount. Given that, I have a few questions.
    1. Is it possible to pay a player 6.5 million and only have like half of it go against the cap?

    2. Can you pay some in cash up front?

After the first report of Lewis keeping options open. It seemed pretty obvious he was gone. This seems to confirm it.

This is his best chance to earn a nice deal in his career. So I hope he gets all the money he can. But the patriots aren’t going to pay top dollar for an oft injured running back.

If we resign anyone, Burkhead can likely be brought back for shorter money. Plus their are many other options via FA and the Draft.

I am a lot more worried about our D and I think our RB core will be solid. I wouldn’t be shocked if we see two backs taken in the draft. Similar to when we took Vareen and Ridley.

Dion Lewis is a playmaker would love to see him back but would also love double dips on late round rbs.
    I think he unfortunately leaves.
He may stay for a few million less who knows.

The $6.5Mbeing kicked around is the average annual value, with a total value (on paper only) of $19.5M on a 3-year contract. Say that $6M of that is signing bonus (guaranteed money). That's spread out over the three years of the contract at $2M/year. Then, you can distribute the remaining 13.5M as salaries distributed across the three years almost any way you want. So, you can get something that looks like this:
    YR-1: Salary, $1M + Bonus, $2M = $3M cap hit
    YR-2: Salary, $5M + Bonus, $2M = $7M cap hit
    YR-3: Salary, $7.5M + Bonus, $2M = $9.5M cap hit
