Did The Baltimore Game Change Anyones Views On "Team Needs"?

Mario Williams salary cap hit this year was 15.1 million. To Franchise him, Houston would have to be willing to pay 120% of Williams previous cap number. That would be 18.12 million. Or, essentially adding another 3 million dollars to their salary cap. They are already short on Cap money so the chances are unlikely, particularly with the need to pay Arian Foster. Though they could free up money by getting Williams signed to a longer term deal.

tough decision for the texans. both barwin and reed came through for them, and it may not be good value for them to back up the truck for williams. the defense did not suffer from his departure.

I would think that he would be a good pursuit for the pats given his versatility as compared to all of the different schemes the pats have employed. he could really make the pats able to go from 3-4 to 4-3 without subbing a single body.....he would be another mcginest

It does sound familiar, but it doesn't sound like Goldson. He's really nothing like Meriweather. They both hit hard, but thats the only similarity. Meiweather hits hard because he launches and uses his helmet. Goldson hits hard without launching and doesn't use his helmet.

You're whole post reads like somebody that only watched the 49ers playoff games, and keyed in on a few bad plays to form an overall opinion on him.

He missed a tackle on Darren Sproles? Are you kidding me? Sproles is the most elusive player in the NFL. Everyone has missed a tackle on Sproles is the open field. He's actually a great tackler for a safety.

Then he almost picks off two passes from Manning, and because there was a collision with the corner and receiver it's a bad play. Again, are you kidding me? The guy had 6 picks this year, only behind Weddle for safeties.

He's one of the best free safeties in the game, and his balance and consistency make him ideal for the Pats where we often play left and right safeties rather than free and strong safeties. He's equally good against the run and the pass.

The only part that I wasn't sure of when responding to your post is when you said he "Has inflated sense of self-worth" so I emailed a couple friends about it. Thats why it took me a few days to respond. One friend is a 49ers fan and one is a pats fan that lives in SF. Neither knew anything about him having a inflated sense of self-worth, and thought he was a pretty normal guy off the field.

Thank you.

Bill made a huge mistake allowing Goldson to leave Foxborough w/o signing the 1 year/$2M deal
he later signed w/ SF.

FS was already a mess then, but has now become - w/o Goldson, Sanders, and even Stomper Meriweather -
a certified train wreck, thanks in part to the drafting of only Sanders & Stomper (& Weed Willie Andrews,
if you insist) over the last 7 years.

Just in case there isn't a top-75-calibre FS avail. to us at a position of value during the draft,
it is Imperative that one be signed as a UDFA before the draft.

You keep saying this sort of thing and you have nothing to support it. You don't know WHY Goldson left without signing a deal. It could have been that the Pats didn't offer him one. It could have been that Goldson made a promise to allow the 49ers to match whatever deal he got if they wanted. It could have been that Goldson didn't like the team. It could have been that the team didn't like Goldson.

To say that BB made a mistake without knowing all the facts is just BS. But, you've shown that you don't actually care about facts if it means you can crap all over BB.

And how could he be forced to sign a contract that may or may not have been offered, and may or may not have bested the San Fran or any other offer and may or may not have been the best fit (on multi-dimensions) for Goldson.

I know I have been presented multiple job offers within a 48 hour period in the past, and I have given up a good bit of salary/total compensation due to other factors. So even if the Pats offered a market rate contract to Goldson, or an above market-rate contract, there is a possibility that he would still have said no. Maybe there was a vibe in the atmosphere he did not like, maybe he looked at film and thought "I'm not a good fit for this scheme despite what Bill is saying etc...." Maybe his wife (if any) or kids hated the local accent/school district etc.

Who knows why Goldson left Foxborough as a free agent instead of a new Patriot? I imagine Goldson knows, his wife (if any), his agent know the entire story and Belicheck knows most of the story,

You don't.

Pro Football Weekly has an article on their dilemna. Estimates they are 20m over the cap. That's without the tag money on Williams. With suitable replacements on hand(Barwin and Reed). Sure seems possible they could agree to tag/trade like we did with Cassel. What would you give up? Definitely, a first in this draft and Cunningham if they want him. Could add a pick next year if he signs an extension.

The other question is he worth that much? We have the space this year and should next year too. When the new tv contracts kick in for 2014 season, there shouldn't be any cap issues.

ProFootballWeekly.com - What will Texans do with Mario Williams?

I'd pay big $ for Williams even if meant not signing a CB or WR in FA. Vince anchors our DL but w/o him the line would look frighteningly thin. Williams is another guy who is good enough to anchor a DL and he's 4 years younger than Vince. If I can have 9 average players and 2 studs for my defense I'd take two stud DL. Yes we have a hole in the secondary and need a 2nd wr but the chance to acquire a player of this caliber is rare. We need to pounce.

Besides from his pure talent what really makes Williams a special player is his Versatility. He has produced in both the 4-3 and 3-4 and would be the key to a D that interchanges between the two schemes without changing personnel.

That said:

1. Does anybody know if his injury is expected to have any lingering effects?
2. Can you franchise a player if you are already over the cap?
