So below excerpt from NESN FA review (winners/losers) highlights 2 AFCE teams signing as BACKUPs 2 of the former starters that were being kicked around as potential Patriots FA targets or possible starters

The Miami Dolphins added receiver Will Fuller on a low-risk, one-year deal, got a good price for ex-Patriot defensive lineman Adam Butler and added some depth with backup signal-caller Jacoby Brissett and running back Malcolm Brown. Lastly, the Buffalo Bills signed quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to back up Josh Allen and added receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who should complement No. 1 option Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley rather nicely.

So, do you think these teams honestly needed/wanted these guys on their own merits, or was this just an opportunity to dry up the FA market, raise the patriots cost to hire a FA and increase the nbr of teams seeking QBs in the draft to compete w Pats all at same time?

Neither of those guys was being kicked around as starters by anyone who wanted the Pats to win.

No, I think that Flores and McDermott wanted a back up QB... and these QB's, in their view, were the two that would best fit their system.

Are you asking if these two teams used valuable roster slots and cap $s on players they don’t need to keep those players away from the Patriots? Maybe bill should change his strategy in free agency, buy up all of a particular position so teams that need a strong safety would have to deal with him?

Bills and Fins are looking forward not backwards.

This thread is hard to interpret. I don’t think anyone is worried about Trubiski or Brissett going to other teams.

Honestly I feel relieved they are where they are at rather than on the Pats.

I'm actually surprised that Trubiski took a backup deal for $2.5million on a team he has NO chance of starting. This guy was a top QB pick you would think he would think he could go somewhere and compete to start.

makes you wonder about his makeup as a player

It says they are okay investing good money in a QB2 because know they have a good enough team that they can compete if their QB1 goes down.

Flores seems to make changes pretty quickly so we may see Bris fairly quickly.

More like it confirms some of the things we heard about him.

Welcome to football Siberia, Mitch!

If they really wanted to get a QB from this FA they would have. Do you think Trubisky would rather be the bills #2 & Brisett the dolphins #2 instead of having a chance to be the Pats #1?

I think the only QB that they'd be interested in that might hit FA is Mariotta.

im not sure i understand. why would Miami and Buffalo’s backup QBs make things more difficult for NE?

Might be overthinking it, the NFL world does not revolve around the Patriots. Especially not when these Patriots are coming off a third place finish in the division. Every team wants a solid backup at QB, and those were needs filled by the Bills and Dolphins. Trubisky is an upgrade over Barkley, and Brissett replaces Fitzpatrick, who left in free agency. Once Newton was signed there was nothing else for the Pats in free agency at QB, it’s all about the Draft now. It’s really that simple.

"Okay coach McDermott, what do you need from us this offseason to get this Bills team over the hump?"

"Whatever you do, do NOT make us have to face Mitchell Trubisky twice a year in New England. Are you listening?! WE HAVE NO ANSWER FOR MITCHELL TRUBISKY!"
