Devin McCourty loses captaincy

Someone must have linked the DMC = MIA thread to Belichick.

Kind of odd in my opinion, but Devin McCourty definitely exhibits all of the characteristics that normally define a player who's staying around for a very nice 2nd term contract.

He's obviously been a leader both on and off the field, has kept his nose clean, said all of the right things, shown his versatility in various positions (sometimes in the same game), isn't afraid to tackle in the least, and has allowed the secondary to grow and progress.

There's zero doubt in my mind that McCourty is going to get paid very nicely within the next 12-18 months, and he has earned every penny of what he'll get.

I would foresee compensation to be in the area of a highly paid safety, which would likely be in the range of about 7-8 million AAV.

McCourty is still the captain of the secondary to me.

How many mid-season additions have there been to the list of captains? The only one I recall is Grahambo, in his final season.

Dez Bryant would have been the sole captain of this team, had we drafted him. And he would have worn a cape.

The article makes a good point about there being a lot of new faces this year. Brady, Wilfork, Mayo, Slater, Mankins, McCourty -- of this group McCourty is arguably the least recognizable name to the new faces. For all we know McCourty got one less vote than last year and that was enough to keep him from being a captain. IMHO this seems the likely explanation for this so called "demotion" versus him being viewed negatively. I'd go so far as to say if they took a second vote mid season, he would probably regain his captaincy.

What is most important is how BB views you. And from what I can glean, BB is a solid McCourty fan. Provided the cost isn't prohibitive, I'd be surprised if he isn't re-signed.

Apparently DMC's teammates do not read PFF where he grades out as an elite safety in the league.

Perhaps it is as simple as BB trying to motivate him....

And thrown touchdown passes to himself. Before going home to rescue a kitten from a tree.

BB doesn't vote for the captains.

And why would arguably our best defensive player (as proven so far this season) need motivating?

Agreed.

I think that, as posted earlier, this may be a case of the new faces (rookies) not recognizing McCourty for his accomplishments. If that's the case, then it might be an interesting idea to restrict voting to veteran players only, those who have been around for a bit, rather than letting the rookies vote.

YMMV, of course, but that's what I'd consider. It's be interesting to see how the other teams in the league vote for Captains.

McCourty is from Rutgers....so are half of the rookies. If anything that should have helped him. Perhaps those who voted for him are no longer on the team.

Hopefully. Otherwise, it doesn't make any sense for him to lose his captaincy.

Or it could simply be that he didn't want three Cs on defense this year, and the older Wilfork and Mayo got more votes (b/c they're more senior).

From what I read nobody replaced McCourty, correct?

It's simply a case of the coaches deciding to have five captains rather than six?

I am sure the usual suspects will ignore those details attempt to make this into a huge story.

From what I've been lead to understand after 7 years on this forum, Belichick doesn't actually pick the captains.

That's my understanding as well.

I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that it was either Belichick or the coaching staff that decided to change the number of captains from six to five.

Was it the decision of the players to have five captains this year rather than six?
