Deadspin: The Best And Dumbest Meme Is Unfolding On the Panthers Facebook Page

It's pretty brilliant, actually.
If you are saying that because of the attention and press I guess it is.

Otherwise the whole thing has gone over my head.

**** Wait, is the joke because it involves the Pats stealing a win from them? Ok, if that is it, then I think its funny.

If Carolina and GB both win out, who holds the tie breaker?

They've luckily got a head-to-head coming up to fix that.

You're thinking too hard. Has nothing to do with the Patriots, has everything to do with convincing people they're going crazy.

No, it's not so much the Pats stealing a win. And it's hard to explain humor, at least so far as it still being funny then.

Look at it from this perspective. The Patriots have the best coach and best QB in NFL history. They work incredibly hard, maniacally, on every aspect and detail of their craft. They should be the model for everyone in sports, or in society, really.

Are they? Of course not. There are endless shots taken, conspiracy theories floated. The internet and public at large is endlessly infested by trolls. A multi-million dollar investigation and associated legal nonsense has gone on for months--and still continues!--over bizarre allegations about air pressure. Based on what? Who knows...but the public perceptions are continually altered and shaped by morons, both in the media and in the general public, who just....say things. Whatever they feel like saying. And that stuff gets repeated...and then people believe it.

So....this. Because people can say whatever they want, and other people will believe it, there are actually going to be people out there now who believe the Panthers are 7-0. (See what I did there.)

And yes, it's also just really silly and 8-year-old like. That's why it's funny.

If you repeat the lie enough then people believe it. Professor John Leonard was just covering this phenomena last night in McCann's Deflategate class with the Mortenson report.

It's a bit of Internet humor because you have to be in on the joke to know better, and there's something exciting to people about tricking others or finding others that are in on the joke. Meme culture.

I am more confused now. I would get a Pats reference if indeed the Pats were being blamed for the Panthers 6-1 record. Ok, that is not it.

You mention that the Pats are destroyed in media and in public perception when they should be lauded. You used this example as a parallel to what is happening with the Panthers to show that people will believe whatever they want.

I dont see the similarity. There is direct. obvious, concrete, non debatable, NFL offical evidence that the Panthers are 7-0. Ok some guy said 6-1 and it was cute and went viral.

The Patriots situation is a team who was universally hated with a rep for cheating. Then some BS air pressure thing happened where for months there was speculation, where nobody had any idea what was going on. Then a report came out which was completely ambiguous, and seemed to (on the surface) incriminate the Patriots in a deflation scheme. It was certainly enough to sway public opinion.

How is this any where near similar to a phony cutesy 6-1 claim of a team who isnt 6-1? I cant make the connection.

Yes, silly and 8 year old like. However I am not sure if it is fair to the team. You have a football team. They went out and took care of business. Worked hard to get to 7-0. Some jackoff claims they are 6-1. Dosent that diminish the accomplishments of the team?

I guess. Maybe it would have been better to start a joke/rumor that the Panthers are really 6-1 because they actually lost a game and the league is investigating the mistake and is going to take away a win. There was a scoring error. People would be worried about which game it was and what happened. Since there were 7 games and some were a while back that could have been floated to get people to start to wonder, and maybe even media to run with it.

Put focus on a mystery game and error, not just some silly 6-1 thing.

Or maybe I am an uptight idiot today?

You're not being an uptight idiot, it's a matter of opinion. The Internet's a big place with plenty of ways to suit your information and entertainment needs.

Not really. I'm not sure why you won't view this as independent of our team. Not everything has to do with the Pats.

I did not know the internet had it line that. Were those sheep really convinced that the Panthers were 6-1?

I live in Charlotte now, so I find this very amusing. Their fans have been very annoying this season. Keep pounding is the dumbest **** I've ever heard.

I've hardly seen any Panthers fan in the triangle until they started winning games this year. Now they're all out in full force trying to talk ish. Like my co-worker for example, I'm like, "I thought you were a Giants fan."

I won't lie, I'm a Kuechly fan, but his team suck.

Seriously?
If some dork pats fan started a 6-1 campaign year (without something actually funny to base it on) I would probably think its equally idiotic and insulting to the team.

Like, I said, if there was a clever Pats are 6-1 as league now has a new rule against teams with perfect records that are in the AFC east and start with the letter P (or something to that effect) I could see humor in that.

But I just dont see humor in 6-1 without some sort of clever use of a clever reference or some jab at the league, or even something at the expense of the Carolina fans.

OK. To me it's funny precisely because there's no rationale behind it. Saying "the Pats stole a victory" would be sort of leaden. But humor's subjective. On we go.

But humor's subjective. .

Jackass Movies

etc

Not funny:
Adam Sandler these days or more like last 15 years
Pretty much any sitcom in history.

Most comedies lately
Made up things that are supposed to be funny without any reason or funny thing about it.

How could there be concrete evidence that the Panthers are 7-0 when we all know they lost to the Pats? Don't believe everything you read on ESPN, they're part of the lie.

I would like to believe you but arent you the same poster who said the Jets took Gronk out of the game when Gronk caught 11 balls.

Are you a trickster? Are you here to confuse me?

There you go. Agree w/some in your "funny" column, disagree with others. Same for not funny. I'm trying to think of something analogous to this....maybe the Office, which I think is funny. Thumbs up or down?

Exactly? Wait! What in my funny do you not consider funny?

The Office? I dont watch TV shows as I just stare at the screen at dont laugh. Its like when someone I was dating tried to get me to watch the Big Bang theory and I just looked at it and was like - I dont get it. Fake things arent funny (on TV) for me.

I do like Carell and Helms from the Office in movies so.......
