That's where we disagree.

He is one of the key cogs that makes it all work in the secondary playing all over the place. I don't see anyone on the team who could replace him at all. If anything it would be a group effort and while you can get away with on a snap-by-snap basis this just reduces your variability and unpredictability.

I don't think DMac is particularly overpaid. He gets the same cash this year (9m) as Randall and Joyner. With Thomas, Mathieu, Amos and Byard making even more.

I stopped considering the prorated signing bonus when it comes to looking at salary / cap hits btw. because those are already paid out and solely an accounting construct.

There is only one player from the 4 who make more that I consider to be a better player than DMac. And quite frankly while Thomas is a better FS I am not sure he has the diverse skillset that enables him to switch competently between 4 different positions during one series.
Whether we like it or not, Bill looks at cap hits and cap savings.

"Mark your calendars: Aug. 1 was the day Jakobi Meyers’ hype train really started rolling. The Patriots’ undrafted rookie wide receiver received extensive first-team reps Thursday and didn’t look out of place at all. In fact, he made some impressive receptions during 11-on-11 drills. We’ll see if Meyers even makes the Patriots’ roster, but it’s clear they like him if he’s getting reps with starting quarterback Tom Brady."

I don't have a plan in mind. But if the opportunity presented itself at cutdown, and the Pats needed a chunk of money to make themselves better at a position that was a disaster because of injuries or what is going on currently with areas of the offense, I think Bill would pull this trigger.

I think my "you" should have really been a "anyone" to make it more clear that I was not responding specifically at you but more in general.

I think we are just disagreeing on the value DMac provides to the defense.

From my POV he is worth the money he is getting, you think he is overpaid. So I can see why you'd think Bill would start tightening the screws around him. And if BB sees it like you then you might end up right.

No! I don't think he's overpaid! My only point is he can easily be a cap casualty if BB thinks a) there is no hope of keeping him/restructure and b) he thinks someone else can do 90% of what he can much cheaper.

You didn't leave me much to disagree with.
