David Thomas placed on IR; Rivers re-signed

Re: David Thomas placed on IR

That really sucks, I was anxious to see him in there. It's especially bad because his upside is so much bigger than Benjamin Watson.

Thomas was more of a jack of all trades receiver rather than just a TE - so to me, this IR move would seem to make a spot available for Troy later in the season.

I'd still see Troy being signed and cut as the games dictate - along with Rivers - but now I can actually see Troy taking Thomas' spot in multiple receiver/TE sets.

And here I was...all waiting for David Thomas to surpass Ben Watson and stuff...

:bricks:

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This stinks... just read the bad news.

I thought he was going to be good this year...

Re: David Thomas placed on IR

The 2006 draft picks can't seem to stay on the field

I know. I was going to say something about The Bust Class of 2006, but that may be premature. Still, whenever a rookie starts his career injured, and stays that way a second year, he never seems to ever make it onto the team in the long run. May Chad Jackson and David Thomas be the exceptions. And may Maroney play a lot more games at full health.

I'm very glad that no one picked up Rivers. Rivers will be fine as the 3rd TE.

Thomas was active for 15 regular-season games last year, so I'd hardly call his durability a major concern at this point.

That's exactly how I look at it. The Injury Gods are hungry and need to be constantly fed it seems. We are going to lose more people over the course of the year. It always happens.

Agreed (10 characters)

Rivers is a better blocker than D. Thomas and a better receiver than K. Brady. It stinks to lose a receiver like DT, but Rivers is a solid replacement overall.

DT never should have been activated from the pre-season PUP. Since Watson, KB, Mills, Rivers, Kranchick and Evans were already in camp, he was needlessly rushed, and now he is - surprise - re-injured. I don't understand why his long-term health was placed at risk, for no good short-term reason.

And I'd rather have Jermaine Wiggins than Marcellus Rivers.

I'm not sure that is what has happened..I remember all the folks who wondered WHY he was on PUP in the first place..thought if anything he was not rushed..Leave it to the doctors to make decisions..just because he may have reinjured his foot does not in anyway mean he was rushed back..Many years ago, I had a friend who had a break in his foot..and even 7-8 months after, when he was told it was OK to play sports, he ended up reinjuring it. Rushed?? I doubt it...a bad break?? absolutely..in many ways.

pity that he went on IR...i was expecting he would have been a good contributor this year

Rivers as 3rd TE anyway is not bad at all

I was shocked nobody picked Rivers up, after watching him all summer. He could have helped a lesser team, just as he is going to help the number one team in the NFL.

Can't wait to see Rivers get back into the flow of things. Sorry.

Ya I completely agree...this year especially teams seemed to be scooping up pats players (Rogers, Mills, Mcruzkowski, etc.) the second they were cut. I dont know how people could watch film on the Rivers from the preseason and not think that he could be a second or third tight end on their own team. Obviously he was victim of a numbers situation here but hopefully he can stick around at least for this year and make a few plays. Then again he could be the type of guy that gets cut and resigned a few more times if the pats need the roster spot (seymour, brown, etc) and put O'calloghan back in that swing tackle/third tight end spot

What is frustrating is we are always drafting a tight end and this year seems to be the first year the two tight end sets are really working, and are visiably productive. Now that Watson has matured and with Brady here now, blocking like we expected, things are firing on all cylinders in this alignment.

I hope Rivers mans up or we will be no better at TE than we were with Graham and Fauria. ok not that bad, but...oh bother

I don't get it, isn't Rivers our 4th TE (the 3rd TE is on IR). How many teams have 1 good TE let alone the depth the Pats have. Don't forgot O'Cal is now a blocking TE along with Brady and Vrabel is a goal line specialist.

At least in pre-season Rivers showed that he can catch the ball, not like he will see any passes. The offense is going so good that they can barely get the ball to Stallworth.

Graham / Fauria - didn't we win multiple Superbowls with these guys? expectations are pretty high if we want more than that. Our TEs have been effective (not great) in the past without the deep threats we have on the roster.

Are things so good we have to whine and complain about our 3rd TE? if so we are the fellowship of the miserable.

Having Mills on the team would be nice around now.

Watson is now the only real receiving threat among TEs on the team. And he's playing a LOT of snaps, on all four downs.

I dont agree with this statement. Granted hes more of a blocker than a downfield, move-the-chains guy, but Kyle Brady is still capable of 20-25 catches this year. He still has decent hands and knows how to get open.

Don't mistake me, Thomas would have been a nice option in this offense. Too bad.
