Does anyone else think this guy is going to suck?

I thought he was good for the pats but i thought he dropped the ball too many times. He had some great catches, but for every amazing catch there was an easy drop.

I also thought David Patten was good but look how he has done since NE. I think Givens will be a little better than Patten and that is it.

I hope i am not going overboard on this, which could be the case since the people i talk to (bears fans) think that losing givens would be the same as losing Jerry Rice in his prime.

Maybe he will be good, but I would be amazed if he had over 700 yards or over 3 or 4 touchdowns.

my guess:
70 catches
900 yards
7 TDs

You have got to be joking.

Yeah i'd say that'd be a solid year for him. Those numbers should be expected with the money he got.

Young hasn't shown me anything great yet and billy volek is billy volek. Neither are in Brady's league. But also, brady spreads the ball around more than both so does that make up for the QB talent difference??

i'm really curious to see how he performs....
Honestly, when tenn signed him for that much my first thought was complete surprise and i felt he was overpayed.

How about...

32 receptions
490 yards
2 TD's

And then IR.

Four things about Givens will hold him back when Tom Brady is not his QB:

One - He's slow. Nearly brutally slow for a WR.

Two - He does not get great seperation in man-coverage. He doesn't create room for himself.

Three - His route running is sloppy. He's not quick enough to make clean breaks.

Four - He wrestles with his hands while catching the football. It's as though his hands are in a constant battle with the ball while catching.

He has strong points to his game, but those weaknesses will be far more obvious A) in a different scheme and B) with a lesser QB.

David Givens will do okay this season. But they didn't pay him to do okay. They paid him pretty good money to be a #1ish type guy, and he won't be able to pull that off at all, IMO. Especially without a great QB. Volek or a Rookie? Fans in Tennessee will be griping about the Givens signing by years end, fair or not.

I just can't see him playing that well this season, because the Titans are a mess. The offensive line is bad, they might not have much of a running game, and who's going to throw him the ball? Billy Volek, Vince Young as a rookie? It doesn't matter how well he plays, his surroundings are just not set up for him to succeed... this year. Down the road, who knows? He might be great.

I think you make some very pertinent observations.

Unless and until he proves differently, Givens seems to me to be the type of receiver that needs to have a top QB who makes multiple reads and also reads defenses really well in order for him to get many passes in his direction. If that is indeed an appropriate observation, Volek and Young don't seem to be the type of QBs that will get him a lot of receptions. If they aren't able to make those kind of reads and stop looking for him, he might not even get the receptions that folks have mentioned.

The guy is a solid #2.

I say 60 catches 750 yards
