Curran: Patriots will be "extremely and uncharacteristically" aggressive in Free Agency

Belichick views himself in the vein of Tom Landry and Paul Brown: the "system" and "scheme" is more valuable than the player.

He thinks every player is expendable. Plus, he has an ego. He probably looks at last year and thinks they simply lost a few close games.

So I doubt they improve next year.
This could be the most uniformed post of the year

Man, I don't like it at all but I understand I guess. Forget the rebuild, just try to win now which goes against everything the Pats have been about for the last 20 years. The Patriot Way is officially dead it seems. The worst part is if they trade the draft picks for a loser like Stafford, it just pushes the rebuild down the road which means mediocrity for a long time.
You rebuild based upon the assets you have. When you have 60 mill in cap space, or more, the rebuild happens in one off season.
I don’t think you have to worry about Stafford.

Yeah, Some teams rebuild in one offseason. You have one great draft and Free agency you are back in it. Look at the saints defense. It was built in one draft. Heck, our 2014 offense/defense was built through the draft and a solid free agency

Quarterback is where it can take years to find a guy who can play. So if Bill feels he can win with a guy we "know" what they are rather than hopes and dreams then I think he will go after a guy like that.

Also have to take into account Bills age. Does he want to play the "QB waiting game" and find out the guy can't play so you draft again? So many act like you draft at #15 and it's Mahomes. But it is more likely to be Dwayne haskins.

Berrios can get separation the Jets game I’ve seen he’s doing his best Wes well welker impersonations getting open in the slot and is used on screens. As well as special teams
Berrios = Gunner.

Reverse the teams and the way they play and you'd reverse the output.

Yep.

Also kinda weird for Curran to say all of this and then mention Jacoby Brissett as an option for the Pats. That's not really what I'd have in mind as "aggressive"....
That would be more of a very “passive aggressive” move

Via draft or FA wouldn't be surprised to see 2 DLinemen added, 1 LB, 1 safety. Also Jacoby Brissett takes care of the ball, 31/13 TD INT ratio isn't bad.

.

Jared Goff might be available. Pricey, though. Could the Pats convince him to rework his deal? For the right price I'd want him here.

Pretty sure this article comes out every 2 years. Evergreen content based that you can regurgitate whenever.

Based on the period of time when they were both on this team competing, Berrios <<<<< Gunner.
Consider how we have evaluated receiver talent
Also Berrios was hurt all thru camp

corner is much more likely than safety. Who are your 2021 corners. Surely you aren't counting on Gilmore or JMac, or much from Williams.

Philosophy on corners:

under Patricia we played a lot of off man coverage.

under Mayo/bb jr. we play a lot of press man.

Newsome from northwestern is perfect for the Patricia defense,

Samuel jr. would probably work in the Mayo /bb jr. defense.

The Pats are ok at drafting safety but absolutely terrible at CBs. So it's a combo of not only what's in the draft but whether they even have the ability to know who is good or not. I would avoid CB entirely until we blow up the WR/CB scouting system that someone created who isn't Belichick. Would go DT, DE, LB, or OLine with our first pick. We've blown 5 high CB draft picks the last 6 years.

This will be unpopular but I think we need to let both Thuney AND Andrew's walk.

Thuney is the best player on the line but you can't have $30M tied up at guard. So unless they trade Mason, I don't see him staying. And Andrew's is a nice player...but not an $8-$10 M year difference maker IMO.

I agree. Center is important for blocking assignment calls but we've repeatedly found good centers with later round picks. Interior linemen in general shouldn't be eating up a lot of salary cap space. It doesn't make strategic sense from an allocation perspective. This is the same reason why taking one of our best players Onwenu, any suggestion to move him to LG is ridiculous. Keep Onwenu at RT because Herron is not a starting caliber player. See if Thuney or Andrews will take a fair (not overpay) price to play center, and then fill LG and RG with cheap players off FA or draft. Mason, Thuney, Andrews, it doesn't make sense to sink big money into interior OLine.

While I don't disagree in principle, I would never, ever allow Shack Mason's bloated contract to prevent me from re-signing Thuney,
who is a far, Far superior player.

Agree...Ideal world is trading Mason post June 1 and keeping thuney.

Mason is due $7 million next season. There’s zero reason to freak out about his contract.
