Covington out?

I dunno....I'm not sure that was his issue. He spent 11 years as a player and coach learning from the best.

I think the real issues were his inability to lead and manage with clarity and consistency.
And put in the effort necessary to be an NFL coach. Him not being ready to start training camp on time is the most glaring example of a coach not really trying that I have ever heard of.

He went from film junkie to not watching any.
Could be he "over-delegated". For first-time managers they either continue to do their old jobs or up-leveled too much.

From what I understand BB was a master at "spot-checking" and "manage by observation".

1. Not all people with Tourette's swear. To be diagnosed, you must have motor and vocal tics that have lasted at least one year. There's no vulgarity requirement.
2. It can come and go. People with Tourette's sometimes have long periods with no noticeable tics.
3. The frequency and intensity of tics can wax and wane, influenced by stress, illness, anxiety, tiredness, etc.
Ive know two people that had the same gross motor ticks, one a my best friend in elementary school and another wa an IT guy. Very rarely did either one of them present these facial movements or yell obscenities. Once this started the other night i became curious as to what it could be.

Ah, maybe that's why Stu had blanked out that one: he wasn't much of a contributor.
Surprisingly, he was on pace for 144 tackles. But like he’s been his entire career, you forget he’s even on the field as his impact was so low.

I remember him as a good player and teammate, but obviously there's a lot I didn't know about him.

I've busted BB Jrs chops on this board but I think the kid knows what he's doing.

In his first year at UofW as DC they improved in every significant statistical category defensively.

Mayo was playing politics.

Agree completely. I thought the Nepotism charges against him were ********. He did a good job here, and I think he will be a good HC someday.

Mayo clearly lacked Xs and Os acumen, especially for someone in the position of head coach. You needn't look any further than how badly the defense regressed on his watch. Covington was clueless how to adjust scheme-wise for personnel shortcomings both in-game and between games. As a supposed "defensive specialist," Mayo SHOULD have been able to help him out but you're talking about a guy who -- like his DC -- had no experience calling a defense (and still doesn't).

BB didn't tutor him the way one might assume. He was a linebackers coach then briefly shared DC duties with SB. SB did the defensive game planning with his dad and called defenses on game day, Mayo ran the meeting room. As for offense, well, there's a reason he dubbed AVP "offensive head coach."

Mayo was so unprepared for the job from the standpoints of both experience and working knowledge, Kraft should've had his head examined for handing him the job.

Not sure how you can say that, when he spent the 2024 season throwing others under the bus for his failures. And when he had 5 years to prepare for the role and apparently did nothing, setting back careers, and putting the franchise and peoples' livelihoods at risk. And his exit has been so childish and toxic, it's hard to believe he's a grown man. No, Jerod Mayo isn't a good dude. He should be nowhere near any team endeavor in the future. He's not smart enough to be a media commentator.
Well.. I mean media gigs like quick slants and post game shows he was phenomenal on.. every has thier lanes.

Not buying it. What does Xs and Os acumen mean? We aren't talking about calculus. Mayo has been in BBs coaching staff for 5 years. He wouldn't have kept him in if he didn't know Xs and Os. There have been many excellent tactical savants who have become crappy coaches that get shell shocked because they don't know how to lead.

In any sport it doesn't always work out that a good player becomes a good coach. There is too much assumption that good player = good coach. English soccer is a prim example of this.

Absolutely agree! every coach in the league at every position knows Xs and Os.. as you perfectly said it's about leading.. game planning, development of players and coaches, instilling confidence in the players.. for example the DB we had when he was here Kenny Moore who ended up being an all pro caliber player. He mentioned he wanted to quit football at one point beucase of coaching.. when he went to Indy he flourished.

Agree. The debate is knowing when to deploy strategy and tactics.

Xs and Os acumen = the ability to understand how/why things work and make good judgments/quick decisions involving strategy and tactics.

Calculus actually is a good analogy. I don't think you appreciate how intricately complex it is for coaches at the pro level to devise and implement a scheme involving 11 moving parts, let alone possess mandatory working knowledge of each position's specialized techniques. THEN you need to understand the same about your opponent to effectively adjust applying it all. Again, Mayo was a position coach (linebackers) for only four seasons before a brief stint as co-DC. His playing experience, while valuable from an intuitive standpoint, was similarly limited re. coaching an entire team involving offense, defense and special teams.

If you remember his introductory press conference, Mayo sold himself to Kraft primarily as a leader. That's what he touted while offering precious little regarding a philosophical vision for how the team would play. Precisely because of his overall lack of technical football expertise, Mayo saw himself as a CEO type overseer/delegator HC (again, dubbing AVP "head coach of the offense," etc.). His ego told him his charisma would suffice while he learned on the fly. Bottom line: he was woefully unprepared and failed on all fronts.
