Compare the Colts since Manning to............

Ok i have a question for some of the older fans on here.... or at least older than me (23)....

The colts are pretty much picked everyyear to win it all... and every year they choke horribly. even with everything goinig their way (pitt game 2006 at home).

i was wondering, what Team's run over a stretch of years can be compared to the Colts' run since Peyton Manning.

Would it be the Bills?? seems obvioius, but are they really that similar?
The eagles??

I didn't start watching football closely till the 90s so im not aware of any earlier teams they could be compared to..

Or maybe this is just so ridiculous that it can't be compared to any teams in history..
does anyone know?

I wouldn't compare them to the Bills because they were good enough to make the superbowl 4 years in a row, which is incredible. The Colts on the other hand, is just a good team that hasn't been able to take it to the next level for whatever reason. But to answer your question, I don't know.

The Colts have gone up against some very good competition in the playoffs and lost. I wouldn't call that choking. I agree that they have often been the media darlings, but I hesitate to compare them to anyone - mostly because their history with Manning isn't finished being written.

John Elway and the Broncos were once considered unable to win the big game. Of course, John Elway finished his career with 7 straight playoff wins.

But really no team that never did anything ever had as much hype as the colts.

Marino got some hype for himself and never did much in the playoffs, but it was about him, not about the Doofins.

Sinilar to marino would be Archie manning, a good QB stuck on a not-good team.

Manning is on a good team, he just chokes in big games

The Colts have gone up against some very good competition in the playoffs and lost. I wouldn't call that choking. I agree that they have often been the media darlings, but I hesitate to compare them to anyone - mostly because their history with Manning isn't finished being written.

John Elway and the Broncos were once considered unable to win the big game. Of course, John Elway finished his career with 7 straight playoff wins.

Elway and Peyton are 2 totally different QB's.How ever Elway was never as hyped as Mr.Choke A Lot himself is today.Elway earned his 2 rings.I will admit that Peyton is a top 3 QB in the game right now.My top 3 QB's are 1.Brady 2. Big Ben 3.A Tie between Peyton & Carson.Some of you may ask why is Big Ben so high on my list.Inspite of his lackluster SB performance he was flawless in the playoffs last year.He also has a ring under his belt.If Brady was to go down Ben would be the 1st QB I call.

I would compare the Colts to the Chargers of the late 70's and early
80's. Air Coryell. Looked great on paper. But, when they got punched
in the mouth. They never responded. Never won the AFC. But, everyone
loved them. On a side rant. I can't believe the national pundits think the pats losing Adam and Willie is a bigger loss than the Colts losing Edge. Here's a list of tremendous offenses that slipped when they started to ignore the running game and rely more and more on the pass. Fouts Chargers,Marino Dolphins,
Warner Rams, and now Indy. We will be talking about the Manning Colts in the past tense as a great team. Oh, they will have their moments. But, no championships. A couple of more teams who went pass-happy and lived to regret it. Our Pats of the mid-80's, Philly is falling into that trap now and did the same thing when Randall Cunningham was there, Rams traded ****erson and kept Jim Everett(what the hell were they thinking?).

I just saw a Manning commercial for Direct Ticket. It's the middle of a play and Manning is calling signals. He turns to the camera before the snap and plugs Direct Ticket. He then goes back to the game and throws a TD pass over the middle.

The score was 28-3 Colts at the time of the pass.

I disagree. Elway and Manning were both #1 picks, both very much heralded by the media. Elway earned his stripes early in his career with dramatic wins and amazing drives - but was constantly chided for not being able to win the big one. Funny you should say that Elway "earned" his two rings. I think it could be heavily debated that without Terrell Davis the Broncos would not have won a Super Bowl - not to mention Bubby Brister was 4-0 as a starter for the Broncos in '98 (Denver's second championship season).

Personally, I think Manning is a great quarterback. I love rooting against him. Unfortunately, too many Pats fans seem to have an unhealthy obsession with him. As for Roethlisberger, I believe he's a darn good leader and an uncanny scrambler....but just like Manning, he has a long way to go before I judge him be one of the best.

Anybody remember some of the "Grogan's Heroes" teams in the mid-70s? A lot of people had us winning it all 2-3 different years in that span at least. We never made it so far as the AFC championship.

Hm. Maybe the Young-led 49ers? They would eventually win a Super Bowl, but for years they were a great team that would run roughshod during the regular season, win their division, but would repeatedly run into a buzzsaw (usually with a blue star on their helmets) in the playoffs. Those Young 49er teams had the talent to win more championships, but those were the salad days of the real triplets.

While more defensive orientated, Tarkenten and the Vikings of the 70s. The Vikes had a stretch of winning 11 out of 13 division titles without winning a Super Bowl. Ouch!

Not Elway the Bronco's made the SB a number of times and lost. I think the closest team I can think of are the SD Chargers with Fouts (;ate 70, early 80's), fablous O, suspect D but would come up short in the playoff's, but there O was good even against some good D's unlike the Colts. Never made it to the SB

The Rams of the 70s also.
They won the division every and never made a SB.

tough one. i don't recall the talk around Marino being anywhere near as vitriolic then as the talk around P Manning is today for not getting a ring...maybe because the SB hype wasn't as great in his day.

i keep reminding Manning bashers (not that I'm a fan of his) of the Elway comparison. he still has plenty of time to pick up a couple of rings.

i agree with the poster who said that you can't compare him to Kelly and the Bills...for better or worse, they got to the SB four times...ditto for the Vikings...

maybe the McNabb/Eagles comparison comes closest, since you had a team that knocked on the door for four years, finally got to the big game and choked it up all over the field in the second half...problem is, nobody compares McNabb to Manning...
