Something bad happens to the Patriots whenever referee Clete Blakeman is in the same zip code as Tom Brady. Mr. Blakeman will be on the field tonight in (ironically enough) Carolina. At least it's still preseason, so maybe the damage won't be all that bad this time around.

Of course, evereyone recalls that Blakeman was at Ground Zero of Footballs Obeying the Laws of Physics Gate, heriocally manning either the logo gauge or non-logo gauge (as the case may be) to record the scientifically precise air presure measurements of cold, soggy footballs at halftime of the AFC Champiuonship game.

And many know that it was Blakeman that picked up the flag negating what was a blatant defensive pass interefence penalty against Panthers LB Luke Kuechly, clinching a controversial 24-20 win for Carolina in November 2013.

What you might not recall is an unusal penalty called by Blakeman in the Patriots' 24-23 loss to the Seahawks in 2012. Tom Brady was called for intentional grounding at the end of the first half, resulting in a 10 second runoff of the clock, ending the half and depriving the Patriots of a chip shot FG attempt.

Brady did something we see NFL QBs do all the time - he threw the ball out of the back of the end zone. Intentional grounding? Maybe according to the strict definition of the rule. But it was a call you very rarely see. Well, maybe just this once. In any event, it was contributor to a maddening one point loss.

Were the world a better, fairer place, Clete Blakeman would never, ever cross paths with the Patriots again.

The Panthers flag pickup was garbage, but the intentional grounding was a fair call.

Agreed. The grounding call in the Super Bowl was far more questionable.

I think that one was fair as well, although it had the whole "receiver ran the wrong route" defense. Let's put it this way, I held my breath when I saw that ball fall incomplete with nobody around. I knew a flag was very possible.

Brady doesn't seem to be too fond of Mr. Blakeman, either.

Brady panicked when he saw Tuck commg right at him and just threw it to whereever. in both those SB losses against NY, tuck was the biggest factor for them.

I'll just go into this expecting the team to get screwed by this Ref. Why not? The league has been kicking them around all off season. Why stop now?

Please don't tell me that Cleve Blakeman was the refs who called intentional grounding on the Pats opening drive, resulting in a safety, in the Pats last Superbowl vs the Giants.

Full disclosure, I don't know who the ref was, but if it was Blakeman my head will explode.

His name is Clete. He's just out to get Brady because he doesn't understand why he doesn't have webbed feet and is married to his cousin. Don't forget the extramarital affair with his sister or the forays into the barnyard...

No it wasn't. I've never ever seen a QB called for grounding for throwing the ball out of the back of the end zone. Out of the 100+ times that happens a season that is never ever called . 100% bullshit call.

It's called about as often as pushing the pile is called....

    ...and for the same reason,

    ...and against the same team.

He intentionally threw the ball away without a receiver in the area to avoid a sack. The flag was warranted. You sound like a Raiders fan complaining about the tuck rule.

So next time Brady heaves up a long pass out of bounds to intentionally kill the remaining clock, I expect the Pats will be penalized, with the opposing team given the ball with time for one last play.

If you don't roll your QB out when performing that maneuver, you have nobody but yourself to blame if you get flagged.

i agree. the team in Sb 46 simply wasn't very good and didn't deserve to win. just looking at the defense from that year makes me shake my head as to what we were doing in that game to begin with. you can't win with edelman and antoun moulden as you CBs and welker and hernandez as your biggest offensive threats.
