Clements to test free agency

Clements' asking price is already high. The one-time Pro Bowl selection and six-year veteran has previously said that he wants to be the top-paid player at his position. Champ Bailey set the standard when he signed a seven-year, $63 million contract with Denver in 2004 that included an $18 million bonus.

No thank you.

Clements is so hoping Samuel gets tagged.

I was under the assumption that the Redskins were OVER the cap? Good luck getting one of them.

No thank you.

That shouldn't be too hard to do. You say you want 7 years at $63 million? OK.

1 year salary cap hit: $5.5 million
2 year: $6 million
3 year: $6.5 million
4 year: $7.5 million
5 year: $7.5 million
6 year: $9 million

7th year he's cut. His cap# is $21 million that year. So, we roll in the bonus into the 6th year instead.

It averages out to $7 million a year.

Here's your $63 million, Nate (ahem, I mean $42 million).

Nate Clements will be a Redskin, no doubt.

Might make sense. Probably not with a balloon pay jump like you have in the last year. Salaries are limited in how much they can increase in one year. remember Guss Scott?

Can you tell us what you figured for a signing bonus and salaries each year?

I just used Bailey's number. $18 million signing bonus from the Patriots (yeah right!) for a total payout of $42 million. So, that's an average salary of $7 million. Or, in yearly payout real numbers after bonus, $4 million a year.

These numbers just go to prove how smart a player and negotiator Tedy Bruschi is. Consider, if he had a huge payment coming up this year, he would have been cut, and he would have been forced to play for the veteran minimum. This is what would have happened to him on any other team. But because he took a hometown discount (and cut any agent out of his 5-10%) he now gets paid an extra $4 million or so for next season. Let's do the math here folks: let's see what happens when you're not greedy. $4 million divided by a 4 year contract = $1 million extra per year. You subtract from that the veteran minimum for one season which he would have earned ($500k divided by 4 seasons = 125k) and then you add to that the cut he would have given his agent (say, 75k a year). So, $1 million - 125k +75k = $950,000 in extra salary for each year of his cotnract.

I really think players don't realize this because the agents prefer all their money up front. But a player can easily price himself out of the market. tedy didn't go for the big bucks and he got paid just the same anyway.

The only thing that shoots holes in my theory is a career ending injury. Then my theory is not worth much, but hey, it worked out for Tedy!
