The mike, from the quarterback's perspective is a player assigned protection priority based on the design of the play, and not necessarily his position. If the play was a run, the mike would be a LB who loves to crash or fill holes (or has that job), and the protection would be aligned towards stoning, or otherwise neutralizing him.
