OT: Chris Long question

I never saw it explicitly explained why Chris Long decided to move on after his one year in New England. Supposedly he didn't like his role here, but was it confirmed that BB even wanted him back? Whatever the impasse was it apparently wasn't over money. Anyone know the real story behind this?

Here's his explanation:

I think if he was OK with just being a pass rushing specialist only he could still be here, but he wanted to play more.

I saw that and recall thinking at the time it was pretty vague. Still seems that way, especially as his role in Philly looks like a situational player much like when he was here.

Loved his contributions. Two plays in the SB alone would make him worth it. Others seemed to enjoy his leadership and he was so happy of being a champ.

Having said that, on a side note, is there anyone else who is a little tired of millionaire so giving money and it becoming headline news ? I know people who dedicate time and effort to help young people. Perhaps Long does that too. BUT, to glorify him because he is "giving his entire game check away to charity", while honorable, doesn't need to be mentioned time and again.

An entire season of paychecks?

Nope, I consider that very sports-news worthy.

Long wanted to play on the left side

Long never received a contract offer from BB as Long implies NE knew he wanted to play in a different scheme.

Long wanted to go somewhere and play a style he was more comfortable with

He’s a class act.
He said all the right things while he was here and even on the way out. Homie Long also echoed the respect he and Chris had for the greatness of BB and TB12.

Giving away your income for 1 year when you won’t play more than 10 total years is about as generous an act as I can imagine.

Long wanted more playing time, and wanted to play at the edge more than inside like he did sometimes.
The Patriots have a problem with players leaving for no good reason, but this year was the worst. Bennett leaves for what rumors say is the same amount we offered. Ryan leaves for a fraction of what we're paying his infinitely worse replacement. Long leaves for reasons that are preposterous. He want to play four steps to the right and is willing to quit the whole team over it? Right after he had some key plays in one of the best football games ever played in the history of the sport? It's aggravating.

If a player leaves for more money, I can understand. Or because he hates the team. Or wants to be on a winning team. But the reason some of our best players left last summer are just the lamest reasons I have ever heard from a football team.

In Philly, he is a 3 down player.

Wrong.

Bennett wanted more than what NE was willing to spend. His GB contract is bad. The Pats screwed up on Allen but not letting Bennett walk. It takes two to do a deal.

Gilmore > Ryan.

Re: Long. So you think BB should change his scheme because a player wants to do something different?

Yeah it's almost like these guys are human beings

What rumors are those? Bennett got 3 years, $21 million from GB. I never heard a rumor that the Patriots were even remotely in that neighborhood.

I take him at his word that he simply wants to play and just wasn't seeing as much action here as he felt he should. He never once complained or disrupted the team and he did his job, but I will not begrudge a player for leaving NE for his own reasons.

Not last night he wasn't.

So, that would make him a reserve player.

As I noted earlier, he seems to be doing the same thing in Philly that he did in New England.

Actually, I thought he was playing more in Philadelphia than in NE. Last night he was in on almost 60% of the snaps. I thought with the Pats, he was in for like 10-15% of snaps but in looking at the data, he averaged almost 60% of snaps with the Pats. So you are right, he is actually doing the same thing in Philly that he did with the Pats.

No. Philly plays a scheme where the de is free tovridh the passer consistently. The Patriots play a lot of 2 gap, and long was often moved inside in a 5 tech.
Think of Richard Seymour at de vs Dwight freeny.

Rapoport reported that Bennett turned down $7 million a year before the season. We don’t know what kind of guarantees were in that offer, and we don’t know what they were offering (if they were offering) after the season with more information about how Bennett would fit in.
