What do you think is a reasonably safe bet on a long kick from Gost?
I think he's fantastic and I think he could sink 2/3 50 yarders.

It would be interesting how much we could shrink the field with him.
Sorry to be late getting to your question:

I don't believe there is any such thing as "a reasonably safe" long kick. I expect a PK to make them consistently inside the 40. Anything over 50 is gravy. 40-50, breaking even is about what I'd expect. That said, Gostkowski kicks them in warm up out to 53, I give him a fighting chance at that range, but if it has to be a game winner at the end, I'd prefer it to be inside the 50 because he usually starts to lose a little off his kickoffs by the fourth quarter. Where Gost can really make a difference is on kickoffs, the more touchbacks he racks up the better the chance the D can turn it into a field position win.

Nice job at revising history by saying the #6 pick was a raw project you expected nothing from.
Newsflash, you expected a dominant player the day you drafted him, and the idea that he is not NFL ready came up after he proved it.

I didnt say I didnt expect him to play at all, I expected them to do with him what they did w/ Dave Harris. take their time and slowly transition him into this complex D. Gholston is and was a project. Everyone knows that. He will be playing a new position he has never played before and he didnt start playing football until the end of high school. Go read any and every scouting report, they all say the same thing. He is a project with huge upside. I did not expect dominance from day one b/c I realize it takes time i.e. Mario Williams, I wanted to see flashes of brilliance while he learns and for ONE GAME I think he showed had a solid showing. I think you wont be able to find a draft scout or report that disagrees with my past sentiment. He played way better then preseason and he got to the QB a second late a couple of times.

Belichick had what felt like either a subtle or unintentional jab at Gholston in his presser today, when referring to the #6th pick overall he said: "Gholston, he doesn’t play that much on defense but he plays on third down. "

It's a statement of a fact - but in contrast to our own rookie linebacker, sort of feels like a slight to me. Mayo, earning a fraction of what Gholston does, played in every snap on Sunday.

Add to that, Gholston has no value on ST, I really think the Jets made the wrong move, as of now. Obviously, things can change dramatically and Gholston may end up being a beast, but for now, I feel like Mayo is the smarter pick.

Mayo is an ILB thats an entirely different story then a rookie 3-4 OLB. What there doing is no different then what they did when they had Abraham way back when. Use him sparingly mostly on 3rd downs until he can understand the coverages etc of the D. The kjd missed OTA's due to school rules, he was behind from the start. Gholston does play on ST btw.

I read Gholston was really stiff in ST - I think it was Dr. Z. How did he look last Sunday?

I'm not bashing Gholston - merely stating my preference that if one is going to pay the money a 6th overall pick demands, I would hope that player would be ready to set the edge in their first season. Using the 6th pick overall for a pass rushing specialist is asinine. We got Crable in round 3 - if he and Gholston are going to have the same role this season, if they are both going to be pass rush specialists who are ineffective setting the edge, well then the Pats made a value decision and Mangini and the Jets did not.

Frankly, if I was the Jets and I was looking for a pass rushing specialist, I would've dropped and picked up Groves, who looked like he had a much better chance of becoming an OLB who could not just pass rush, but drop in coverage and set the edge against the run.

Pressure with out a sack can be just as disruptive. Pollard was close to a sack last week and look where that left us.

To be fair, if he had hit Tom above the knees, the only thing we'd be complaining about on that play is how Moss fumbled away a 30 yd reception without being hit by a defender.

The Jets did not draft Gholston primarily for this year. Both guys have played exactly one meaningful game, I think its premature to say either are ineffective as edge rushers. The upside of Gholston is noticeably higher then that of Crable or any defender in last years draft. We can not base our anlaysis of the pick off of one game or even a year. Exhibit A: Mario Williams.

Fair enough. 10 char

That's a pretty fair assertion. A lot of top picks take a few years to develop - hopefully he does, because blowing a #6 overall pick could be crippling. I personally wanted Gholston in the draft - however, O.J. Mayo has proven to be everything I was looking for. He's big, athletic, instinctive, hard-nosed, and a great leader - and he's starting and producing extremely well from day 1. Good luck to the Jets, but I'm happy with what we have personally.

Lets not forget that the Jets squeaked by a horrid Dolphins team in week one. So it's not like they are some juggernaut. Favre's heave on 4th down could have been picked off by some of the better defenses.
