Ryan is a JAG, and is impressive only insofar as being a JAG NFL starter is a pretty darn impressive thing to be.

Otherwise, the article is reasonable.

It's kinda strange that we on this board are definitely his biggest critics, and the media outside of here all says he's a decent cornerback.

Sure I do think a lot of the criticism is warranted. But I'll say in his defense he has played better the last couple weeks.

I assume Ryan will be on Decker this Sunday. That should show whether hes a JAG or not

Out of the many CB's in the league how many are really good? The NFL has made certain the shutdown corner will eventually be extinct. They made the rules to make it that way. I would bet Ryan is in the top 60% of corners...maybe...I don't know for sure but there are a lot of guys out there that are terrible.

I like ryan as a slot corner. I am afraid when he's on the outside covering wrs.

You are on point. A lot of pats fans find themselves in this bubble where the only football they watch closely is the pats and for all the other teams they usually just look at stats and watch highlights. There's nothing wrong with that of course who has time to watch every nfl game either the keen eye of watching for your own team. My point is definicies for pats players are magnified greatly where we typically only see positive stats for a large amount of other well known players in the league. This creates the "why can't we get guys like that" complex which just infuriates me more than anything. Perpetuated by shows like felger and mazz by the way they discuss the pats and their selection of callers. Sorry for the rant it's just one of the most annoying things to deal with as a New England sports fan.

Absolutely. I would like one more JAG cornerback for depth. Fletcher was less than a JAG.

Was Ryan benched in the Super Bowl, or was he thinking of Arrington? With Revis, Browner and Arrington, then Butler, I don't think ryan had enough of a role to be considered "benched"

Being bad isn't being a JAG and Ryan has been real bad in coverage at times this year and last. He should be happy to be a JAG, most players are, even starters. Maybe Butler is outstanding, but it's for sure, none of our other CBs are.

I'd be quite happy with competent but unexceptional.

First Arrington was benched and effectively played his way out of town. Then Ryan was benched for playing two yard back in the endzone for an eight yard pass caught in front of him for a TD. The Pats finally switched assignment and put Browner on the tall receiver and Butler on Browner's former assignment. IMO Ryan's problem is that he can't play man on man.

Thanks. I guess my point was, someone with such a limited role, it's hard to differentiate between benching and the normal way he was used/not used. Arrington was almost a starter as nickel back.

Yeah, few CBs are really great at man coverage, but Ryan has to improve some there. I always liked his tackling and ball hawking and think he's probably a natural safety, but we're loade there.

Arrington was benched for Matthews

Ryan was destroyed by Lockett in the 1st 1/2.

Enter Malcolm for Arrington and more Browner for Ryan.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Patriots D has the building blocks in place to become one of the most versatile units ever put out on the field. They're young, talented and buying in. The DL excites me, the Linebackers excite me and the Secondary is coming together in a reasonable fashion. If only Roberts and Brown weren't on IR, then this could be one helluva D.

I feel the opposite. I like him outside and am terrified when he has to play speedy slot guys. Devante Adams in Green Bay last year?

People around here though act like he's not even competent, like he can't fit the square wooden block into the triangle hole.

This thread should be re-titled.

I suggest "Article praises Pats' defense, PatsFans posters dump on Logan Ryan".

Seriously folks, why does this thread contain something like fifteen or twenty posts exclusively debating the nuances of whether Ryan is a JAG and how bad or not bad that is, and at best one that tangentially hints that there might be some other players on D worthy of discussion?

So here's a question for all the Ryan haters: is Jamie Collins as much better than a JAG as Ryan is worse, moreso, or less?
