Patriots Player Departure Chase Winovich traded for Mack Wilson

A 24 year old LB with starting experience (900+ snaps as a rookie) & supposedly played well in a rotation this season. Good move.
Interesting. A “prove-it” trade for both players as they were both drafted in 2019 and their playing time declined. But Wilson will be 24 next year while Chase will already be 27. Hopefully some more upside with Wilson. We’ll see.

The team apparently had no use for Winovich.

Now, we have a player competing for reps at ILB where we need help, especially of both Hightower and Bentley are gone.

At the minimum Wilson will be upgrade over Chase at special teams although he first has to make the roster which is far from given. But that went for Chase as well. Might be a good sign a proper PTP EDGE is coming (FA or Draft or both). Hopefully good sign for Flowers reunion..

If Wilson can turn back to his 2019 form (his rookie year), the Pats got an absolute steal. But from I can see is that he has been injured the last two years and might have been miscast in Cleveland. Browns fans seem to hate him because he sucks at rushing the passer from what I can see online, but he is more of a run stuffing and coverage LB. If that is how Cleveland judges their LBs, maybe they will be happy with Wino since that is all he can do.

He’s not good at contain or setting the edge which Belichick places a huge value on. He sells out to get around the tackle. He’s good at it and will do damage there. But that’s all he does.

Pretty much. If anything this trade could be a win for Wino to play more of his game at CLE.
Hopefully it turns out well for Wilson too.

Wino may do very well there. I’m sad he never was able to match our excitement over his potential with results for whatever reason, but seems like a good dude and I wish him well.

He’s also got a nonstop motor which is very helpful and valued. I think the other issue is that there were rumors of buy-in problems during 2020, the expression “locker room lawyer” was used which I infer to relate to questioning game plans and usage. There are lots of anecdotes about BB valuing player feedback from the captains - Rodney and Ty stories are out there. But from someone who hasn’t proved himself like Wino, I think that rubbed him the wrong way.

Like I said, a prove it deal for both guys, but I think Chase is very likely to prove it on his end as he can be good in his role, if he can find a team that values that role more than BB does. But I don’t think he’ll grow any further; he’s got 3 years in the NFL and is already 27, he likely is what he is. We’ll see though.

They're both in last year of rookie contracts.

Wilson's base salary is about $1.5 million more than Winovich's. I just looked it up. The Pats might give Wilson an extension though.

As part of a front with Garrett, Winovich will likely "look" a lot better because it's entirely different role and expectation. Mack is what many here are clamoring for - a smaller, but quicker LB.

Total "change of scheme" move for both teams.

He is young and fast and not your typical Patriots’ LB. He had a good rookie season. Definitely shows signs that Belichick is switching the defense to be smaller and faster and against the grain for him.

Young? Yes.
Fast? Not so sure about that….

His play speed may be better than his 40 time, and that is obviously more important. Wino was not going to be part of the solution, so getting a guy with potential at a position of need seems like a good move. I’m in.

In 2019 (his rookie season), Wilson had 82 tacks, an INT, 7 PDs, 4 STF, a sack, and a forced fumble. If he can return to that with the Patriots, the Pats won big on this trade.

Not that Winovich is Von Miller BUT one way to protect your mediocre CBs is to send that guy off the edge with abandon (i.e. not worrying about that player's involvement in stopping the run).

Seems the Patriots are still going to place a premium on holding that edge.

Don't know, don't know, don't know, but I do know that a pass rush is the single most important thing about playing football, and that nothing else comes close. It's more important than a good QB, and the only thing that beats it is having a generational QB like Brady.

If I were Belichick and someone could guarantee a great pass rush for a consistent 10 years, I would take it over Joe Burrow or Matt Stafford, but I wouldn't take it over To Brady.

From what I can tell from what I have seen about him, his speed is more in bursts and reaction time rather than straight line speed.
