Kevin Faulk's suspension and Sammy Morris's play directly led to Brady's injury in 2008 and they didn't get cut. Jones's screwup didn't get him traded, though it might have been a minor factor.

I think that point is debatable.

Showing up at the police station without shoes and a shirt tweaking out during the most important week of the entire season usually isn't going to go over well in Foxborough. Honestly....how many players on our team could get away with that? You could count them on one hand, possibly on two or three fingers.

Faulk having a couple of joints in his pocket during the offseason at a concert is much different from what Jones did. I certainly think you have a fair point that it wasn't "the" reason why he was traded, but it may very well have been more than a minor factor.

Money and you cant pay him top 5 money if he isnt a true top 5 difference maker and if hes shown lapses in good judgement you cant then let him cash out because then he will more than likely check out as well.
I still say the Bryant suspension played a small part in the decision making. A very very small part 90 percent of this was money.

Actually THAT is not true. It's been mentioned by several sources, including Miguel that if the Pats pick up his 5th year option in May, he can be cut anytime before the first game of the 2017 season (around 9/1) with no cap consequence to the Pats. That $11MM option becomes guaranteed for skill only after he is on the roster for the first game of the season. The biggest risk for the Pats is that they pick up the option and he gets hurt and can't play in 2017

I guess I'll have to disagree with @Miguel on this one. This is what the CBA says:

The entire Paragraph 5 Salary for the Fifth-Year Option shall be guaranteed for injury-related termination only, effective upon the Club’s exercise of the Option. The entire Paragraph 5 Salary for the Fifth-Year Option shall be guaranteed for skill, injury, and Salary Cap-related termination if the player is on his Club’s roster at the start of the player’s fifth League Year (i.e., the option year).

Unless the NFL and NFLPA have agreed that "start of the League Year" means Week 1, the CBA defines "start of the League Year" as the day FA opens.

If they bring in Long and he can set that edge at the same level, they've added Cooper and a second over a 3rd for nothing.

The difference is a 2nd + Cooper next month vs. "a 3rd for nothing" 25 months from now. Pretty big difference, particularly when we have no first round pick this year.

Also, I think a lot of people are throwing around the assumption that Jones will definitely bring a 3rd round comp pick. How do you know that for sure? He could suffer an injury this year, get busted again, or just have a down year. As a matter of fact, he could end up being forced to sign a "prove it" type of deal for one year, should any of those things happen. We just don't know yet. I'd say the odds are pretty good that he ends up being fine and bringing in a major contract, but he could also sign a 3/30 type of deal just as well even if he has another 8-9 sack season, which wouldn't warrant a 3rd round comp pick.

Of course a major part of this automatic 3rd round assumption is that we wouldn't be bringing anyone in to offset the comp pick formula, and with a fair amount of projected cap space next year, NE could've brought in a player who may have brought that compensation down a bit. To take it one step further, Goodell may have made sure that we wouldn't see another 3rd round comp pick just based on the fact that we've been doing it a lot lately. Can't say that we'd have been shocked if that happened. The bottom line is that it very well could've been a 4th round comp pick just as well.

I don't think that's the specific issue that they're discussing, though.

All 5th year options are due a year (plus) ahead of time, which is why we had to make the choices on guys like Jones, Hightower last May, when they were in between their 3rd and 4th years. This is to try and give the player/agent/team time to plan accordingly.

What they are discussing is when, specifically, those cap hits/salaries become fully guaranteed. The debate is whether it's the start of the league year (normally the first day of free agency in March), or whether or not it can go all the way to week 1 (September).

A first-rounder two seasons later (they traded him in fall 2009 for a first-rounder in 2011).

A first rounder by a team that hadn't finished better than 5-11 for six straight seasons at the time. The Raiders still lack top level talent so by all expectations the pick would've been in the 10-20 range. Moreover, we could afford the time to wait back then since we were in the midst of a rebuild. Too bad the Raiders finished 8-8 for two straight years. Imagine the Raiders had finished 6-10 plus getting ahead of the 6-10 Texans in draft position. Could've drafted JJ Watt.

If I mis-read your comment, apologies, but I'm sure you can see how someone may have arrived at that conclusion. It seemed as though you believed that Davis would have given us more than what Seymour brought--hence the comparison.

You overthought this. Don't think you can insinuate that we would've gotten more for Jones than for Seymour out of these comments. Although as robertweathers said earlier, I do think that Al Davis would've at least considered giving us a first-rounder for Jones too.

Bittersweet trade for me. One hand we get back excellent value with a 2nd round pick and a young guard with high upside, clear cap space and bring in a hungry Long. On the other hand we lose an excellent DE, odds were the Patriots had him at the bottom in terms or an extension before the big three. Best of luck CJ.

2 years ago we had 2 pass rushers that played 95/98% of the snaps with 0 depth sometimes.

Now we have 2 great vets + 2 kids that have high upside + 1 cheap vet with all the skills to play the andre carter role and excel. Do you guys remember Ayers, he got what 1 sack every game with us?

Jones is gonna demand 14m per at least, they almost can pay all 5 men with that kind of money ( 3m Long + 3m rookies + 4m Ninko + 8m Sheard).

They get OL depth at least, but with Dante i believe that Kid can at least be a great backup for cheap ( he will be an upgrade over Kline IMO plus if you cut kline you save 1.5m).

And the 2nd round they wont draft S or CB so they wont miss the pick ... LOL

They can go WR / OT / WR / TE / LB / DL

WR is a huge need, they need a bigger WR

OT is a need because if they draft one Cannon is out IMO( they will save a lot of money)

DL They are deep ate the position but Hicks played a lot o snaps last season so they need to replace him and with this rookie class you can get talent in the 4th round

LB only have 3 LBs so ...

TE they only have Gronk so they need another TE

the rest of the line is not awful. they played awful, sure, but when you had players injured like solder and vollmer and stork playing out of position it will lead to disastrous results. this same line basically won a super bowl the year before (minus wendell).
