Oh and just as a reminder to everyone. Chad Scott was so effective last year that BB chose to play Alexander against the Colts over Scott. Chad Scott should have been more effective against Dallas Clark than Alexander. But Scott wasn't on the field.

Anywho, its clear this thread can be boiled down to a semantic argument. Italia says Troy never played corner because he never was in the "corner" of the pass defense. DaBruinz calls Troy a corner because he sure as hell didn't play safety. I'd go with DaBruinz on this, but really, this is an argument no one should care about.

My take was DaB said we're fine for cornerback depth because of players like (he mentioned these by name) Brown Anam and Richardson.

I myself would prefer Scott as a backup and believe that without Asante we have lots of backups and no top NFL starters, (I'm on the fence about Hobbs as a starter).

My position is the three he named aren't any better than waiver wire acquisitions, although Troy is a smart player.

*sigh* Yes, Alexander is a LB who had the task of attempting to cover Dallas Clark. That doesn't change what I said unless Scott wasn't healthy. But I didn't see him on the inactive list prior to the game.

As a CB/S, Scott should have the skills to cover Dallas Clark better than Alexander did. Scott, since he wasn't inactive, should have been the one on the field.

Yes, it would have meant the Pats playing in their Nickel package, but it would have limited the ability of Manning to get Clark the ball. Well, it should have, anyways..

And, as I said, the Pats also have options with Wilson and Meriweather. Both of whom played CB in college. And Wilson was taking a LOT of snaps at CB during last year's training camp.

While Scott hurts the depth, I am not worried yet. Should the Pats lose James or Gay during training camp without Asante being signed, then, yes, I would start to be worried.

1st off as far as Troy Brown goes, no comment

Many players play a position in the college they don't, and really can't, play in the NFL. IMO, a reason Wilson, despite getting practice reps at CB, doesn't get reall playing time there because he isn't that good at CB. I would not like to see the Patriots have to depend on that. In the recent passing camp, at least 1 of not more scibes mentioned he didn't do so well at CB. I've seen him in coverage at S and he does OK with that but I don't think he'd be a good starter at CB. Just ny opinion. From Meriweather and Wilson, I would rather see BM there than EW.

If he makes the team, I'm sure he will return a couple punts. Probably situationally, inside the 20 punts.

I agree that the oft injured Wilson and Gay are a great boost if healthy because Wilson was a highly respected corner prospect and Gay has played some corner in big games.

Other than that, it's just naming everyone on the roster with a "C" next to his name IMO.

No one with the least bit of experience except Troy and at 36 he's an emergency option only IMO.

I tend to agree with you if you're ot happy with Scott as #2 (although I like his size and versatility as a backup).

I think Asante and a bunch of marginal starters/backups is what we have.

I actually posted earlier elsewhere that at least maybe with a different field, etc., we can hope for fewer injuries. So yes, I do have the "so it begins" bummer beginning as well. We will all just have to watch and wait.

If the "freak" injuries are "freak" injuries, they should happen once or twice then stop. There must be some unifying principle at work -- but if you mention that around here, you often get a long, scholarly explanation about the various freak injuries, injuries that had nothing to do with this, nothing to do with that... I'm sick of postulating theories. Anybody else have one?

Anyway:

1) We don't know the extent of the injury.
2) We don't know that "so it begins." Past history suggests it, though, of course.
3) Sure we have lots of other guys, though naming everybody with CB next to their names does little good. A lot of JAGs there. Come on.
4) We can get more JAGs.
5) Asante is a very good CB, but not what he thinks he is. Depending on injury, we might have a huge drop in talent (rather than a big drop) based on an Asante holdout. My take? Take the hit and deal with it, if need be. Don't cave and pay A.S. Of course, there will be other opinions on the subject.
6) CB depth, or DB depth to broaden the fears we've already flushed out here, is definitely an issue. But unless this "injury bug" at DB gets figured out and stopped, it does not matter what bandaids are available.

What is the unifying factor in the DB injuries? Is there one?

If not, we will have whatever secondary remains to us, year in and year out. Stop the run and realize that 3 things can happen on a pass play, and 2 are bad, as the cliche goes. Don't count on being in the top 10 secondaries, but realize that's not the end of the world, especially with the weapons on offense and the toughness of the team against the run.

But if - if - we see the "usual rash of injuries" at DB, someone much smarter than me in Foxboro has to get to the bottom of it, at this point.

It's frustrating. But the sky's not falling. It's business as usual, whether in a super bowl season or not.

But good luck to you guys... I definitely would like to see you go far enough to receive a good, old-fashioned butt whippin' again in the postseason. Try to make it to the divisional round this time. I don't think we'll have to play in wild card week this time.
