THEARCHIVES has taken a lot of heat for bashing the Pats for having Jackson on special teams. I've been one of the people to rip into him. I decided though to take a look at the active roster for the AFC Championship and figure out our kickoff coverage unit based on who THEARCHIVES thinks shouldn't be out there.

No starters allowed. That's 22 down. I also include the starters based on what formation we're in, so that drops Heath Evans, Banta-Cain and Troy Brown. I also consider Kevin Faulk a starter since he has played long stretches of games depending on how we attack the defense.

We also can't use players that are important for the future. Maroney and Jackson are out. I'll include David Thomas, because with the flashes he's shown and Graham being a free agent, he should have been someone we protected.

Then you obviously have to mark off lineman because they aren't going to have the downfield speed needed. So mark off Hochstein, O'Callaghan, Green and Wright. Lonnie Paxton? Eh, he's made some tackles on punts but I don't think he's got the stuff to do it on kickoffs.

So you have Gostkowski left that's obviously kicking off. Then you have 8 players that make sense on kickoff: Andrews, Chad Scott, Spann, Baker, Mickens, Mays, Izzo and Woods.

However, you still have two more spots to fill and three active players remaining: Matt Cassel, Todd Sauerbrun and Lonnie Paxton.

THEARCHIVES, it really comes down to that, We either have 300 lb. linemen running down the field or QBs and punters. Either way, Chad Jackson is safe.

what;s the definition of a starter for the patriots?

their wr core rotates starting roles(1st play of the game)

if they go 3wr formation does that mean watson and graham aren't starters?

All I can say is they probably had CJ out there for a good reason, whatever it is.

ya he's fast and he's a football player. it was a fluke injury. they ahd him returning punts in another game, had he gotten injured people would be mad, but you have to let the kid play.

I think if the rumors that he had a difficult time learning the play book are true, then maybe he will be stuck on "special" teams for a long time. hehe.
