To me the early franchise makes plenty sense, it shows, or the organization wants it to show, that they have no doubts about Matt's skills and how the organization evaluates his skills in being a starting qb in the league.

Other teams will look at this and say the Patriots have no doubts about this talent, which may sweeten the pot for us....

All I keep hearing from non-Pats people is Matt Cassel isn't worth the price, that it's better to go after Derek Anderson. What are these people smoking?

Uncompromised and Absolute Patriot Hate.

Patriots will start

You've got to be joking me. As a GM, you should listen to all offers. I'm not saying that they should pursue trading their HOF QB, but don't for one second, get so loyal to one guy, albeit a franchise guy, that that one player becomes bigger than the goals of winning.

Just stop, Junior GM wannabe...I'm talking about the idiotic insanity of trading Tom Brady and keeping Cassel this season...if we were to follow YOUR lemming lead, we'd end up over the cliff smashed to bits on the rocks below...you would've made a beautiful punching bag when Elway was in his late 30's. The "goals of winning" look pretty FREAKIN' GOOD with the guy who JUST SET ALL TIME NFL RECORDS, still in his prime and coming back this season. The fact is "I'm not saying" is EXACTLY what you're saying when you state "listen to all offers". Here's what I'm saying...the Patriots will have as their starting QB this year, TOM BRADY, and they'll use Cassel to make the team stronger. THAT'S the WIN/WIN. Trading Tom Brady is something only an obsessed fantasy football geek would even contemplate.

Note that absolutely no-one will be upset by that fact.
Aw man, come on ONLY two firsts?!? Any you know how terrible Billy B is picking in the first round, what was that guy's name he picked last year? Mustard or something. Whoever heard of him again?

Ok, but technically that whole Lemming thing is not true. So your diatribe kinda sucks...

I'm not a Derek Andreson fan, but he DID have one very good season. Everyone expected good things out of Anderson again this year too. He still had some nice weapons on offense, and there was no real indication that he wouldn't pick up where he left off. BUT he didn't. I think the comparison here is that Cassel *COULD* possibly be a "flash in the pan" QB as well. As a GM of a team looking for a QB in '09, I'd be a bit concerned about that. All of that being said, I thought Cassel did a tremendous job this season. He certainly seemed poised a focused, and who doesn't like that in a QB? I'm definitely not an NFL scout, so my opinion on what he's worth is pretty much worthless. However, I do think that Cassel's price tag certainly comes with some risks. Basically it will have to come down to how desperate a team is for a QB and what THEY see in Cassel. Should be REALLY interesting to see how it all pans out.

Cassel is a lot more mobile than Anderson was or is, has a stronger arm, and has pretty damn good accuracy. Not to mentioned he was tutored by the likes of Carson Palmer in college and Tom Brady in the NFL. He has also worked with two of the best coaching staffs in both college and the NFL. Don't forget that Cassel was one of the best quarterbacks in the AFC this year despite not having played since his last game in high school.

After watching Anderson last year in the Browns offense and Cassel last year in the Patriots offense, I also have to think that these people are smoking crack.

If you paid attention there was. Anderson was bad in the second half of 2007. His overall numbers obscured a great first half and a crappy second half. Cassel was the opposite, getting better as the season progressed.

Anderson has a stronger arm than Cassel. He just can't consistently throw it where he wants too, makes poor decisions and, from what I heard, had zero control in the huddle.

Good points. Anderson wasn't THAT bad though in the 2nd half of the season. Certainly not as good as the first half though, which is a good observation.

He was bad :

Derek Anderson Stats, News, Photos - Cleveland Browns - ESPN

In the last 7 games he had a horrible 9 TD / 10 INT. With an average QB rating of 73.0. That rating would have placed a QB at 29th in the league last year. He was THAT bad. He was horrible including 4 INT in the critical "win and you're in" game at Cincy.

I'll paste what I wrote on another board:

On a side note for the Derek Anderson advocates, keep in mind that even in his breakout season, he had a mediocre completion % of 56.5 (28th in '07), a QB rating of 82.5 (17th) and was picked off 19 times (tied for 2nd-most thrown). Cassel this past season only averaged 6 YPG less passing but graded better in TD:INT ratio, completion %, and QB rating. And I don't want to hear about how Cassel had two Pro Bowl receivers when Anderson also had two of his own (Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow both eclipsed 80 receptions and 1,100 yards and were selected to the Pro Bowl that year).

Anderson will come much cheaper but it's for a reason. Cassel is the better quarterback. Going after Anderson is announcing to your fans that you're settling for mediocricy.

I just want to know how long it is before we have an "Official Trade Matt Cassel Thread"

Well, I've been thinking about starting a thread called "The Official Trade Cassel, Brady, and Moss Thread", but I didn't think anyone would bite.

You just might get them to bite on Cassel and/or Brady, but not Moss. The only time 'Trade Moss' threads came up was, ironically, before he was even signed.

You WOULD like that though wouldn't you, Steeler fan?

I would LOVE that actually!

Oh...excuse me, Mr. Overmind of the Message Board....guess they don't get much prose up there in Cannyduh beyond the basic "**** and Jane go to well..get water and acorns..."
