Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today (Reported $63M 6 Years 28M guarante

Believe me, that was all Bill dared hope for here in 2000/2001. He was as shocked as anyone that this team came together as fast as it did.

Weren't his words something along the lines of, "Can you believe we just won the f***ing Super Bowl with this team?!?!"

Rich Gannon with some love for Cassel

Chiefs sign QB Cassel to multi-year deal - Kansas City Star
Gannon said he saw all he needed from Cassel last year when the youngster filled in for Brady, doing it with the poise of a longtime starter. Gannon said he wouldn’t have been surprised if Cassel had wilted under the pressure of being Brady’s fill-in on a team with yearly Super Bowl expectations, but Cassel just kept on rolling.

“You’re looking at a guy who’s young, who has proven just in one year of play that he is very capable,” Gannon said.

As a "Cassel supporter" last year, im very happy for him. With Pioli building the team around him, I think Matt will do very well. This year is questionable, but his future is bright. Congrats Matt!

I often disagree with Gannon, but I sure do agree with him on this. Good for you, Mr. Cassel. And thanks for what you did for this team last season.

I like Matt and all, but come on, all that money for a single year with no other years of play for comparison? Plus best WR's in the game. I had expected more from SP than this crazyness. Glad for Matt, but OMG!

Its a lot less money than Stafford got, and stafford has NO YEARS OF PLAY to compare to.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Very happy for Matt, but (donning asbestos suit) something keeps gnawing away....

$63,000,000 > 2nd round pick

Really? Because I think the Chiefs got extremely hosed in this deal. IMO, I think they are paying far too much to Cassel. Congrats to him though and I wish him the best in KC.

Cassel was going to make more than $14 million in one season, guaranteed. For another $14 million guaranteed, the Chiefs get an extra 5 seasons if they want them.

The Chiefs made out like bandits. They got their starting QB locked up for less than it cost Detroit to get Stafford, and they only had to toss in a second round pick to get both that QB and their starting OLB.

To me, there are still too many question marks to automatically give Cassel a huge long term deal up front. I would have given him a one year "prove it" deal (and yes, I know you can say that he already proved it. But, let's be honest here, the Chiefs' offense isn't exactly as loaded as our's is) and THEN resigned him to a long term deal if he displays the same poise as he did here.

Signing Cassel is WAY better than what other teams did in wasting a 1st rounder plus more money and more years for Stafford or Sanchez.

Where in ANY of my posts today have you seen me say that a Stafford or Sanchez pick would have been better than getting Cassel. As a matter of fact, where in ANY of my posts today have you even seen me mention either name altogether?

By the way, I'm also a Gator fan. I know how bad Stafford sucks.

I'm replying to your statement that there were too many question marks to give Cassel a long term deal.

I think if you look at the lack of proven history with top QB draft picks, or guys like Matt Schaub (who only played a few games), and the huge long term expensive contracts they got... signing Cassel is a relatively cheap and less risky move.

That would have been much more expensive, would have created needless tension and wouldn't have benefited KC unless Cassel completely craps out this season. Even a mediocre season would have netted enough suitors that the price would be high after the upcoming QB contracts get done. Eli's contract is probably going to blow the lid off of the franchise tag number, because he's nowhere near a top 5 QB and he's still expected to get paid obscene amounts of cash.

I wouldn't be surprised if Eli gets 18+ AAV. Maybe even 20.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

But $63,000,000 = 2nd round pick plus a full offseason to use all that extra cap space.

If I were BB, I'd much rather have had all the money plus the time to use it, rather than wait six weeks and get, say, a mid-first rounder.

That is is probably the best point in this thread.

If we don't pull the trigger with KC that early we don't get Taylor, Springs, Bodden, Lewis, A. Johnson, C. Baker, A. Smith, Lenon, Banta-Cain and 12 draft picks. That move (including Vrabel and his contract) gave us the flexibility to add some good talent. Some will pan out, some won't but we know Cassel was gone anyway and Vrabel was after this year.

I assume you mean that BB did well to get that, given how much the Chiefs were going to have to pay him in the end.

I guess all we can say is that "only time will tell." If he brings a Lombardi back to one of the great franchises in the league, then it will have been more than worth it.

A retrospective of vintage Matt Cassel threads over the last year or so, starting with the oldest and ending up with the most recent. You don't even have to click on any and read the comments; the change in tone of the titles as the year passed speaks volumes.

Thanks. I usually don't like "in your face I told you so" posts, but in this case it's more than warranted. Some folks terminally wrecked their reputations during the anti-Matt hysteria after Tommy went down. Ian handled the situation very well.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today (Reported $63M 6 Years 28M guarante

Indeed in about 3 years from now,Pioli will either look like a shmuck lost without BB at his side with a huge cap mistake or he will be confirmed as a continued genius at his job without much aide to help make decisions.

I have a feeling that Scott will do just fine.
