Casale's Most Improved Patriot (GOOD NEWS)

We'll know a lot more about Woods after the first preseason game. Rushing the passer has always been his strength. Can he set the edge on the run? That's the question. If not then his upside may be TBC-like (tho he might cover better). ST play is going to make a big difference but right now it looks like he is going to doom any chance of Chad Brown making this team.

Can anyone point me to the thread where MicheganDave tells about what happened to Woods in college?

If this Safety, Mel Mitchell, is healthy and returns to form, I suspect this has a major impact on STs. And on the LB roster, too. An additional ST, nominal DB, may take a position from a ST, nominal LB.

I feel pretty confident that Willie Andrews has already earned a spot on the roster for his ST coverage, and also return, ability. He looks to be a 10 year ST player. If Mel can become the Jerod Cherry of the STs, as he was for the Saints, that can push another STer, off of the team.

That has a couple of ramifications for what appears to be transpiring at LB. Pierre Woods appears to be "getting it". Great news but what that probably means is that Chad Brown becomes a more certain candidate for the "Shadow Roster". Pierre a good ST also, becomes the legitimate #6 LB and the practical 3rd or 4th OLB. This frees an OLB, either Vrabel or AD, to join and take snaps at ILB. This creates a pushdown stack at ILB as well.

The Pats end up with a OLB crew of Colvin, Vrabel, AD and Woods. Don't forget Bruschii and Seau were also OLBs at earlier points in their careers, as well, for emergencies.

They end up with a ILB team of Bruschi, Seau, and swingsters of Vrabel and AD. More than likely they need to keep a couple of ILBs, and guys who can do both play ILB and also ST, if only 8 LBs are kept to make room for the extra DB. Alexander is a ST Maven and played ILB and OLB; Mays did well as a ST player too he is a ILB. Lua might display similar ability as a pure ILB. All are young, and Alexander has taken regular D, ILB snaps. Lua might be in that category too, and Mays is a question mark, but certainly an above average ST player. If two of these three guys prove out, that is a good ST and some regular D ability as well, there is no room for ... Larry Izzo, on an 8 man LB corps.

Great breakdown. I read in one of the blogs that they have Lua calling defenses for the 2nd team unit. Personally I am not high on Alexander or Mays as ILBs and hope Lua rises to the occasion.

This may have some good info.

I'd like to see Lua rise to the challenge, as well. I don't think Eric Alexander is going anywhere. As for Izzo, my guess is he stays, as well.

Woods taking advantage of his opportunity Tom Casale, Patriots Football Weekly

Pierre Woods is making a good impression on everyone at training camp, including Bill Belichick, as he tries to earn more playing time at outside linebacker.
-----
“I think it definitely helped me coming in here having played more than one position in college,” Woods said. “Coach Belichick expects his players to do a lot of different things and if you can’t adapt and pick everything up, you won’t be here very long.”
-----
Surprisingly, Woods’ coverage skills were better than advertised and he learned his assignments quickly, something a lot of young linebackers that pass through New England fail to do.
-----
Even with his strong start, Woods isn’t assuming anything when it comes to making the final roster.

“Nothing is set in stone. Just because I was on the team last year means nothing this time around,” Woods said. “There are a lot of hungry players trying to make this team. I have to continue to put in the work, improve and show that I can play special teams. In this league, if you stop and smell the roses, someone else will pass you.”
-----
One player, in particular, who Woods has a good relationship with is Colvin. The two can often be seen joking around or talking trash to each other in the locker room.

One time last season while Colvin was being interviewed at his locker – blocking Woods from getting to his – the rookie barked over that Colvin should have his own section blocked off to accommodate all the lesser players. Colvin replied that he had recently taken Woods under his wing because the youngster idolized him and was following him around at practice like a lost puppy. It’s just one example of the good-natured ribbing the two dish out on each other.
-----
Following Thursday morning's pratice, Belichick and Woods walked off the field together talking. After the conversation, Woods trotted back to the locker room with a smile on his face. Apparently, even his head coach is happy with Woods' performance in training camp thus far. Looks like the Patriots may have found a linebacker of the future after all.

He wasn't buried, if that's what you're asking. This guy was a bigtime recruit, tops in the country. If anything, they threw him in there too early, and he struggled a bit. People were really really down on him, and he perservered, and by his senior year he had come around and become a solid team player. He wasn't a game changer, but he was a significant contributor. Unfortunately his rep as an underachiever was very hard to shake.

FYI, Vince Wilfork and Richard Seymour both came out of school with reps as underachievers.

If all the LBs remain healthy, then the depth chart looks something like this:

Vrabel, Thomas, Bruschi, Colvin
Brown, Seau, Lua, Woods
Rogers, Mays, Izzo, Alexander, Bissinger

If there's a 4th OLB, then it's between Rogers and Brown.
If Izzo has to be kept, then hopefully only one of Lua, Alexander or Mays is kept, ass-u-ming a 4th OLB. And I know for whom I'm rooting.

10/11 LBs kills depth at other positions; 9 is enough.
