Pierre Woods. It's pretty clear Casale's not exactly a punch-puller when it comes to the Patriots. (See: Bruchi, Tedy and Dillon, Corey). So this is especially encouraging...

"I’m not in the business of getting the fans all jacked up for no reason at all. However, I think the Patriots have a real player on their hands in Woods."

Woods is clearly the feel good story of camp so far. Let's hope it shows up in the first game NEXT WEEK

Indeed. Here's hoping that Woods' off-season work will translate into in-game production.

Maybe he just gave Alison's girlfriend a big tip.

Woods improvement is nice to read and welcome news coming from several sources. That said, this quote from his piece highlights where I think Casale struggles - separating reporting from editorializing, and forgetting that in his job, reporting to me the consumer of his writing is equally as important as writing a report for his boss. That line smacks of condescension and is unpleasant to read and detracts from a piece that offers Patriots fans some good news from the young linebackers.

In comparison:

3) Woods on the warpath. In a blocking drill in which running backs and tight ends square off against surging linebackers, one on one, linebacker Pierre Woods stole the show. Woods powered past third-year tight end Matt Kranchick twice. A second-year linebacker from Michigan, Woods was an offseason award winner and looks primed to step into a top backup role previously occupied by Tully Banta-Cain.
Reiss makes no excuses for his opinion expressed in the paragraph heading and closing sentence. He then reports his observations in context to show why he has the opinion that Woods is moving into TBC's role. Mike implicitly credits his readers with the wit to understand why he expressed an opinion, believing we'll recognize Woods' improved performance came in "Training" Camp against a TE most pegged to not make the team.

Between Pierre Woods and James Sanders, I am stoked.

I feel like we've been waiting years for the next low round/undrafted guy to step in an make an impact in the defense. If both these guysare as good as advertised during the regular season, we could have out best defensive depth since '04.

Did he post it under his own name? Or under AlisonLovesPierre?

I have no comment for this thread. I am on a strict post-count regarding Pierre Woods, and the untoward number of glowing reports on his camp to date have maxed me out.

PIERRE!

Patchick: would it help if I badmouthed him for no reason? If that's what it takes to help the more experienced veterans, I'm always willing to contribute.

Seriously, though, good news about young LBs is always welcome.

I would like to see Casale keep his word to us before I can take him seriously. If he's reading this he knows what I mean. It's not what you say your going to do, it's what you actually do that counts.

Let's focus on Woods a bit rather than the reporters. The thing that has me excited about Woods, but also a bit wary, is that he has tremendous athletic ability. He was a top recruit at Michigan, who could be mildly classified as a disappointment there. That's why he wasn't drafted, and it's also why I'm a bit wary of his TC performance.

On the other hand, I'm excited that a player who clearly has first round talent may have finally found himself, and the right situation which will allow him to become the player he was always projected to be.

Hey StinkyPete,

I am not trying to be rude, but what about Mike Wright's development as an UDFA? Randall G@y?

Hopefully Woods will at least fill the spot of TBC and continue to develop and be better vs the run than TBC. Woods has some quality vets to learn from, let's hope they rub off.

The thing that ncouraged me the most about Woods was his winning a parking spot for off season workout accomplishments. At least we know the effort is there.

According to http://michigan.scout.com/2/523422.html. The kid has a tremendous amount of upside.

It's great to hear that he has the outstanding athletic ability to match the off-season work ethic.

However, I'm still being cautious. While I'm glad to hear the improvement, lets see how he handles the increased scheme workload and physical challenge in the pre-season when he goes up against 1st teamers.

With that being said, clearly BB sees something in the kid. If he can spell Colvin or Vrabel on the edge for 10-15 snaps a game, put some pressure on the QB, drop into coverage like Wille mac did and spread those wings and hold the edge on the runs and funnel the ballcarriers to the line, all the better.

It's good to see talent..an upside and worth ethicwith a BIG need of the team..he has some solid LBs to mentor him..from Vrabel and Colvin to Chad Brown who was always a big time rusher rom OLB. I am optimistic as well..but I agree cautious as well. How will he react, read...cover?? Stop the sweep...get to the QB???? The preseason whould give us an indication of things..glimpses

I really like what Vrabel said about the kid, as well.

"You're not going to find a better guy than Pierre in that locker room."

That's from the Globe notebook today.

I liked what I saw from Woods in the preseason last year, I'm looking forward to the preseason games this year to see how much better he looks with a full year of work.

Since we read the same article, let's show the relevant excerpt.

"Pierre Woods Pro Day can be summed up in one word; outstanding. His short shuttle and three cone are optimum for the outside linebacker position. A 4.7 forty yard dash is a very solid time for him as well."

Plus look at his face in the photo (michiganscout). LOL!!! He obviously got buried at Michigan.

Could be a gem.

He was a preseason favorite of mine last TC.

Oh, Patch, that's awful !

Is there perhaps a very discreet 12-point program?

Yep, his 2006 preseason was nice surprise for Patriots watchers and this preseason will be very interesting to observe.

Maybe I'm just taking that locker room remark about the young fella in the wrong way...
