Cannon practices! And BB comments (merged)

Short yardage full back?

Well until he's ready to get into the OL at some point.

Absolutely. He has the size and speed. Think Refrigerator Perry. Bigger and only lighter by 20 pounds.

Re: Cannon participates in practice for first time

I think he'll be the monster TE on runs. Talk about a right formation that's going to be Waters, Solder (or Vollmer) Gronk, Cannon. We need a nickname for this wall.

Ballhandling options bedamned, forget the "or", at least once I want to see ALL the beef lined up!

Re: BB Dropping the Hint: Load Up The Canon!!!!!!

I don't want to post more of the article - - encourage to use Reiss' link.

But, it is obvious that BB absolutely LOVES this kid!

6'5 358 pounds and has BB's admiration.

BB made it a point to say it's not a SLOPPY 358. Goes against some of the Cannon naysayers who claimed that Cannon wouldn't be able to play in the NFL without losing 50 lbs..

The Flying "V" *GRIN*

Could you imagine a goal line formation that had the following:

Gronkowski, Solder, Light, Manking, Connolly, Waters, Vollmer, Cannon, and Hernandez.

Then put Woodhead and BJGE in the backfield.. *LOL*

I nominate "Fort Knox".

If you look at the Colts and the doldrums they are experiencing..

Then fast forward to our franchise, and right before out eyes it is being rebuilt for the long run.. our O line, barring injury, is gonna be one of the best if not the best.

Cannon has not played a down, but after Dante graduates him from the Dante School of Offensive Linemen he will be ok..

This is all very good stuff, proud to be a pats fan.

And then spread Woodhead & Hernandez out wide. Do it on the goal line and confuse the hell out of the defense.

So, the question here seems to be how many more paychecks the O-lineman living on borrowed time will be getting before he's on the street.

...and what position(s) they envision for Cannon. I think most of us were picturing RG when he was drafted, but how much of that was based on the Pats' existing talent at the time? Right now, I'd be surprised to see Brian Waters give up the starting job this year or next.

IMO (and barring injury), Cannon is either going to be the right guard, or he's going to be a backup. He's too big for center, he's not taking out Mankins, and I don't see Vollmer or Solder playing guard moving forward.

For the goal line formation, I'd rather have:

Light, Mankins, Connolly, Waters, Vollmer, Solder, Gronk, Hernadez

......................Brady

......................Cannon

.......................BJGE

350 is really, really big for a RG (or even a RT) in the Pats' offense--very few people can pull, zone block, etc. with that kind of weight. There's a reason we've never had linemen anywhere close to that weight.

Lets hope he's the truly rare player who can move very well at that weight.

Exhibit A:

Draft Preview: Marcus Cannon - YouTube

When he's had to, he's pile-driven his man backwards. He would have easily gone in the first round except for his diagnosis.

Excellent! Hope he can get some backup reps this year and replace Waters in a year or 2.

He is going to be a player....

and he is not this....SLOPPY

I agree RG or backup are the most likely positions sounds like he can backup just about anywhere though, which is good.

Why to big to play center though ? My worry on that position is that he does not know the system well enough to make the line blocking calls. But, if he could make those calls and snap accurately on the shotgun, I think he could be a good fit at center in the future.

Koppen is as tough as they come but he can get overpowered by the elite nose tackles. Connoly can as well. Cannon sounds like he is in a different league with respect to strength.

I'm excited for this kid and his story....... You KNOW he has a MONSTER chip on his shoulder too. Every team took a pass on him 4 times when he knew he was first round talent. All because he was diagnosed, though no fault of his own with a very treatable form of cancer.

This kid is going to be a beast someday, and we are not in a desperate situation to rush him out before he is ready.

On a tangent...I really enjoyed the Sports Science bits of Nate Solder and Devin McCourty that were in the related videos attached to that link.
