But obviously not you because you kiss his ***** on every move he makes and never ever question his judgement. Back when we were winning the super bowls, it was easy to just nod your head in approval. Lately though, he's been 50/50 at best in his personnel decisions. I think this move was more out of desperation than anything else. Oops, there I go again, someone call me a troll and put me in my place.

Given what we have at MLB now, the injuries, and what is available through trades... I'd say this is a good move

Mark me down as one who thinks he is over the hill, but that doesn't mean he is worse than our other options right now. He was great in his prime and he only has to NOT be the weak link in our defense. I think there is a reasonable chance he can do that.

I think this move puts to rest AJ's post about not being worried about MLB... clearly BB was worried enough to drag seau's skeleton out of his grave and might even pull trigger on a trade with Dallas. I think that says it all.

Guys stop making up reasons why Seau can still be a decent linebaker, just 3 days if I had proposed the question on whether he had anything left in the tank, I am sure noone whould argue in his favor. This is a move that will bring us the extensive knowledge of the Dolphins defensive play book. A la lawyer milloy in the 2004, when he left us for the Bills and they wipped us 31-0, even though they were no where near that much better then us.

Seau is a 4-3 OLB and 3-4 ILB by nature. You won't see him as a pass-rushing 3-4 OLB/DE.

Intuitively, yes. His body type and style would make him a natual ILB. Yet with three weeks until the season starts, and knowing that the OLB duties are less complicated and easier for an outsider to pick up, I would think that would be a better spot, where he can be more instinctive. I don't know being injured virually all last year how much he learned from Saban.

I see no reason he can't at least put up McGinest sack numbers. He's done so in the past. I'd say put him at OLB on first, second, and short yardage downs.

Oh come on. Saban is coach of Miami. Belichick already has his defensive playbook. Unless you think that Seau learned the Dolphins offense. The playbook stuff is so overrated it's ridiculous. Now, when you get into the game plan, like Milloy had, that's something entirely different.

You're right to say nobody would argue in his favor a couple days ago. I wouldn't have. But most people on this board realize that Belichick's evaluation of players is better than their own. If Belichick says he's worth signing and bringing to camp, than he is.

Considering that Dom Capers is the new DC down there, I doubt Seau would bring much inside info regarding any playbook stuff.

Maybe some insight to player habit and playcalling audibles though.

When he finally wins his first Super Bowl this year he Chargers can hold a rally for him in San Diego like the Bruins did for Ray Bourque after he won a Stanley Cup for the Avalanche. "this ones for Junior !"

Does anyone know if Seau has ALREADY signed? or Is it still in the works?

Right on. Between Seau, Brown, Banta-Cain, Beisel, and Gardner, I think there's enough ammunition to fill that #4 hole, as well as the main backup roles.

Unless I'm mis-counting, we're trying to fill the #3 AND #4 holes with the names you mention! (Vrabel, Colvin, #3, #4)

Bruschi?

Couple O'Thoughts on the Junior Situation:

Let's not count our chickens before they pass the physical (see Suggs, Lee).

If Seau passes the PE, then he should huddle with Vrabel and BB to discuss the specific positions each would play. Perhaps they could line up next to each other, Vrabel as ILB and Seau as OLB, then Vrabel as OLB and Seau as ILB. That is, if BB thinks that he can play both sides effectively.

This move, if consumated, should not preclude the FO from persuing ILB and/or OLB talent for both the present and the future. That talent could arrive via trade or cutdown date pickup, and hopefully from next year's draft. The only LBs known to be keepers, excluding Seau, are Bruschi, Vrabel and Colvin. Everybody else's job is available, until proven otherwise.

As has already been mentioned, do not underestimate the intangibles that Seau would bring to the huddle and to the locker room. He may not be as vocal as he was in SD, since here he is the New Guy, but his teammates would feed from his hunger, his intensity, his passion and his professionalism. Similar to Brian Cox, Bobby Hamilton and Roman Pfifer in 2001, and Harrison and Colvin in 2003, Junior Seau could be the catalyst who drives this team through the grind of the regular season, and on through the playoffs in persuit of a ring of his own.

Also, any addition to the LB corps could mean the future subtraction from it of Larry Izzo and Don Davis. Beisel, Gardner and the DBs should more than make up for the loss of their fossilized mediocrity.

205 posts into the thread, and finally the real questions are being discussed!

Sporting News listed Seau as an OLB in 2005. Did he spend enough time with Saban to
a) learn to play ILB (I don't know how Miami used him) and more importantly
b) have an idea how the Pats defense works?

I say let him take his lumps at ILB so we can play Vrabel at OLB where he'll get less wear and tear.

From Mike Reiss, kind of buried in his column...
"...Seau could help bridge the gap until Tedy Bruschi returns, assuming Bruschi will."

Is it just me or does that line worry anybody else as well? I've been very uncomfortable about this injury ever since they didn't report it!

Jr. Seau + Rodney Harrison = Serious defensive attitude!

Bruschi is not playing right now, and we don't know exactly when he will return. Banta-Cain and Beisel (switch names if you like) are both in our current starting 4. I believe if Bruschi were healthy we would not be trying so hard to bring in Seau.

Let's plan on a linebacking corps or Colvin-Vrabel-Bruschi-Seau, with TBC rotating in every-third series plus passing situations. Until Bruschi comes back, we can get by with ONE of Gardner/Beisel/Anderson/New Guy lined up next to Vrabel.

I think Chad Brown could be in the rotation too when/if he gets back from his injury, but this time at OLB.

I just logged on to post the same thing. What does Reiss mean by this?

He's probably just toying with us. I doubt he has any inside information on Bruschi's injury, because if he did we would already know about it.

I don't think too much should be read into this. I think he is just saying nothing is for sure and this applies to all injuries. I don't think it is a reflection of Bruschi's specific situation. From what we've heard, this injury could cause Bruschi to miss some games, but nothing has been said about it being one that would end his season.

I'll echo the general sentiment of this thread. I don't see a problem with Seau playing 20 max. plays, as long as we have someone besides Beisel playing the rest of the game (Shanle hopefully). There is little to lose here; we are that desperate for LB reinforcements, which proves AJ and the "Everything is fine" crowd wrong.
Adding veteran depth when it is available does not mean there is a disaster goign on.

But it doesn't mean everything is A OK either. Recruiting a retired player to play for the team signals that BB has little faith in his LB corps.

It's an injury that has ended careers before, that's why it was said. And that's why Bruschi needs to take his sweet time and let it heal properly. I hope he misses the first 2 games at minimum.
