Actually, Isaac, there ARE rules that stipulate how a player accrues a season.

As I understand it, the only way a player can not accrue a season is if he holds out past that Nov. deadline. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it would be insane to penalize a player for being injured and I've never heard of it happening.

Then you haven't heard of Kellen Winslow, currently of Cleveland. I believe that he was not going to be given credit for an accrued season after he lost the year because of his motorcycle accident. You know, the one where he violated his contract and it cost him last season.

ARTICLE XVIII
VETERANS WITH LESS THAN THREE
ACCRUED SEASONS

Section 1. Accrued Seasons Calculation:

(a) For the purposes of calculating Accrued Seasons under this Agreement, a player shall receive one Accrued Season for each season during which he was on, or should have been on, full pay status for a total of six or more regular season games, but which, irrespective of the player’s pay status, shall not include games for which the player was on: (i) the Exempt Commissioner Permission List, (ii) the Reserve PUP List as a result of a nonfootball injury, or (iii) a Club’s Practice or Development Squad.

So, Scott will be a RFA next year since his injuries were football related.

And it would explain how Sean Morey is still an RFA even though he's been around since 1999.

Basically, you jeopardize your status by incurring non-football-injuries.

The Winslow case also activates the "Dufus Clause" of his contract, which stipulated - and I'm paraphrasing here - that if you get injured by screwing around like a dufus and taking ridiculous risks with your body, which for the purposes of this contract is our merchandise, you can get really really screwed.

Man, that guy is a sad case. First, he's supposed to be Tony Gonzales crossed with Antonio Gates, on steroids meth and crack all at one time. Then, he gets himself legitimately injured first season out. Then, he gets dufus injured... now, who knows what his value will be, once he's rebuilt?

I get all verklemt just contemplating that guy.
