I'm just gonna skip right over the " Edelman's better than Welker" and go straight to 'who's going to start the "Should the Pats part ways with McDaniels?" thread'.:bricks:

ummm......yeeeaahh........edelman puts the pats in a better position to win than welker

Josh is the coordinator so if he feels that Edelman should take more snaps than Welker, so be it. He knows more about the offense and players than anyone here. I do not know what goes on behind close practice and how either two are doing. For all we know, Welker could be in a slump which might explain the easy drops the past two games. I cant imagine the Pats starting Edelman in spite of Welker's contract issue. BB has always stated that he plays the best players for each game. If JE is playing better right now, then he deserves it and based on what Josh has stated, this might be the case.

I'm starting to think Josh is a bad coordinator.

Anyone who buys anything any player or coach on the Pats tells the media,I want to sell you some swampland in Pa

I think Brady actually is so full of **** when talking about keeping guys rotating and fresh for the reason behind this move and it made him make a fool of himself...no one was that gullible to buy that crap.

Brady should avoid questions like this and leave the B.S. to the coaching staff to explain to the media, they will never get the REAL truth.

That's all well and good, but maybe people should consider the possibility that Josh McD isn't all that he's cracked up to be. I'm sure lots of folks in Denver and St. Louis would be more than happy to share their opinions of Josh with us.

I do agree that, on a Belichick-coached team, in most cases, whoever works harder in practice is going to get more reps, period. There are certain obvious players whom this doesn't apply to, but in any case, I seriously doubt that Welker has been outworked by anyone.

Sell Sell Sell. I can smell the BS all the way from PA

Josh knows so much more about offense that us fans that he could lead the Rams to last place in offense averaging less than ten a game. This season they have already scored more points than they did in 6 games with Josh, and this without any major additions to their offense and with Schottenheimer as their 0- coordinator.

So basically you are saying Josh doesn't know more about the offense than us forum members? Guess someone here should send in their resume to the Pats front office.

LOL, you funny.

McDaniels leave more offensive knowledge in the toilet after his morning coffee than anyone here has in their entire cranium.

Mike Lombardi was talking about Hernandez/Welker/Edelman on WEEI this morning.

His take on Welker/Edelman was effectively this:

Given the way McDaniels was using Hernandez (i.e. with much more diversity than last year - often using him as a slot receiver) that what the Patriots need more than having TWO slot WRs (Hernandez and Welker) was to have someone else running an outside route opposite Lloyd.

Lombardi's take is that, Edelman is better on the outside than Welker is - and that this is why, given the game plan and available personnel of the first game in particular, that you'd see Edelman getting more looks than Welker.

Now, with Hernandez out, one would think that Welker regains his position as the primary slot receiver.

IMO fans often confuse themselves by looking at stats and proclaiming someone like Welker (or Troy Brown in the early 2000s) as "the #1 WR"

They may have caught the most passes, but neither Welker nor Brown were EVER #1 WRs.

That's a role for someone who can stretch the field and run deep outside routes - something that we are hoping Lloyd can do. Many fans confuse themselves by equating #1 WR with the WR who catches the most passes when that's not really the case.

After that, regardless of how many passes they catch, a slot WR is a role player, and it behooves the team to keep defenses honest by adding someone like Hernandez or Edelman to that mix rather than allowing defenses to always key on Welker.

I think these criticisms of how McDaniels is using Welker will subside now that Hernandez is out. No other TE on the team can do what he does and Welker will go back to being asked to do what he does so well.

Lombardi isn't the first to say that, but at this point it seems like that is the most plausible explanation. Edelman isn't taking Welker's snaps. Hernandez is/was.

WR1: Lloyd
WR2: Edelman
Slot: Hernandez/Welker

Welker did play some outside last year, but it seems the team thinks Edelman is better there. I'm wondering if that experiment is over and now Branch is WR2. We'll see.

I really wish that just once the Pats would take the short-term view of something. Based on the draft I thought this was the year but I guess ****-me-not.

I love Edelman, especially all the roles he can fill but he should not be taking snaps from Welker at WR....Get Welker the damn ball.

You are missing the point . McDaniels does not have to compete with me or other forum members he has to compete with other professionals , and this is where i think he is lacking. If you have a bad doctor and he gives you medical advice even though you don't know as much as him one should be wise enough to be skeptical about it.

Hernandez did not take Welker's spot, Edelman did.
Before Hernandez got hurt look at the first snaps:
- 1st snap of the game, Edelman plays slot, Brady passes to Edelman and it gets tipped/intercepted.
- 2nd snap, again Welker on the sidelines, Hernandez and Edelman in, Edelman gets the quick pass.

It's clear that right off the bat they wanted to force the ball to Edelman, almost to prove a point.

What is interesting about this article isn't that when you are in shotgun you pass much more, whether it's this year or last year. What this article misses is that the Patriots were in shotgun half the snaps this past game, and whether that's smart to use shotgun that much when at least the perception from opposing coaches is to play pass all the way.
