Building The 2026 OL

We are in a 2-3 year rebuild. Who is our OL for the 2026 run at the division. Presumably, we'll add a couple net year, and perhaps in 2026.

For now, our status quo of the future OL is

Wallace, Sow, Andrews, Robinson (needs to add some weight), Onwenu
(Mafi)

We will add more upgrades in 2025 and perhaps 2026.

I'll turn back to 2025 as we all will.

My point is that we draft for the future. We build a team for the future. That is especially true when we are in the first year of a rebuild. I think it important to have at least some kind vision of what we are building for 2026.

Well to spitball based on the current stance, can still see LT being critical and C as well when looking at David Andrews likely riding into the sunset soon. Would like to think the guard spots will work themselves out. Could make sense to draft a plug and play LT in the 2025 draft like many suggest vs. looking at free agent market. That seems to coincide with Wolf’s feelings. That leaves room to sign a top C on the free agent market. Now they’d be cooking. Who knows what Wolf thinks though seeing there were low market value positions this offseason they could have comfortably upgraded within the cap that they just chose not to. He probably is banking on a current roster guy or future late rounder to fill the spot eventually. I’m interested in seeing what Charles Turner does. Played on a great team in LSU and was a catalyst in running that high powered offense that produced a Heisman. Those are the type of UDFAs that are worth throwing a dart at.

We drafted six guards in three years (maybe J Andrews is the center answer), so that part of the rebuild should be done once there is more experience.

Signed Onwenu to a big contract, so hopefully RT is solved.

I still can’t believe the incompetence with OL coaching, developing, and drafting that has taken place since the dynamic duo were unjustly broken up. Cole Popovich and Carmen Bricillo.

Cole Pop, who should have been brought back—he’s an assistant with the Texans—didn’t want the experimental jab. And Bricillo, now the Giants OL coach, was nabbed by McDaniels when he went to Los Vegas.

No need to draft Cole Strange. Isaiah Wynn is the LG. No need to draft Mafi or Mrs Robinson. We had Chasen Hinds. But to play those two out of position when it was so bloody obvious it wasn’t going to work? Hinds at LG and Wynn at RT? Foolish.

Getting RGs are not difficult in the draft or FA market.

And who is Billy Yates? An affirmative action hire. Not very good at his job. That’s why ThanksDad took over the coaching duties last year to fill the void.

Ferentz is now an assistant to Bricillo with the Giants.

We now have decent prospects for a passable QB and WR room. We now have decent prospects for sub-par backups and one quality swing man on OL. I do understand that the team was very unlikely to address all three areas of weakness in a single off-season, but the effort at rebuldling the OL has been pretty anemic. They could have done better, I think, with the picks they had. (Of course, if they had done so, I'd probably be whining about their efforts on the WR side! That's how it goes, I guess, when your team has sunk this low.

State, what does any of this have to do with the here and now? All of this is about the Belichick regime. If you had said this last November it would have been completely relevant, now it has nothing to do with this team. The criticism is valid, but only in a historical context. This is a new regime, with new players, coaches, and direction, and at this point that’s all that matters.

Mgteich has pretty much covered the OL in a series of threads about it. Re-signing Onwenu, but Strange’s recovery. As far as Wallace goes even the top tackles taken need a year or so to get used to playing in the pro’s, but if he can play LT adequately it will make it that much easier to play Maye later in the season,

OK, so through the rose-colored glasses we look.
1) Draft a 2025 LT that is ready to be a quality starter.
2) Have solid Sow at LG (BTW, when does he move over?)
3) have Andrews at OC (either the older vet or the untested youngster)

You have 3 key players. You want ALL three to move different positions. And you count on Jake as one of the 2024's five OL's and a rookie LT.

Wallace, Strange, Jake or draftee, Sow, Onwenu
main backups: 1st round draftee, Robinson, (C/G draftee or C/G free agent or Leverett)

with the 1st round LT being a swing OT before (maybe) eventually switching with Wallace). We'd need another OT addition to play swing OT in order to move Onwenu. Even if the draftee LT was ready to start Day 1, and Wallace at RT, we'd still be short a swing OT.

I really can't see how we can have a look at 2025 with '24 not even underway yet. We don't know how the team will fill out, nor do we know how any of the draft prospects will do in their respective seasons.

Seems awful early to be looking ahead as fans. I'd like to see how this team rounds out. Whatever they are on opening day won't be the same as who they are Jan 1.
